Bluetooth is a global, RF-based (ISM band: 2.4 GHz),
short-range, connectivity solution for portable,
personal devices. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group
(SIG) was founded by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and
Toshiba in February 1998, to develop an open
specification for short-range wireless connectivity.
The group is now also promoted by 3COM, Microsoft,
Agere Systems (formerly Lucent) and Motorola. More
than 2500 companies have joined the SIG.
IEEE 802.15.1 is working on standardizing the PHY and
MAC layers in Bluetooth
Whereas Wireless LAN was findout by the IEEE 802.11
standard established in 1997 to define both MAC and
PHY requirement for Wireless LAN. WECA (Wireless
Ethernet Compatibility Alliance) brought logo called
Wi-Fi [wireless Fidelity] products comply with
interoperability requirements.
802.11 a - 5GHz, for up to 54 Mbps. [OFDM].
802.11 b - 2.45GHz, for up to 11Mbps. This band is
available globally and no license is required. Uses
CCK to transmit data. Has Wi-Fi Certification.
802.11c - Bridge Operation Procedures.
802.11d â?" Global Harmonization.
802.11e â?" MAC enhancements for Quality Of Service
802.11f â?" Inter Access point Protocol [Roaming
compatibility]
802.11g - data rates 20 - 54 Mbps at 2.4GHz
802.11h - Dynamic Frequency Selection and Transmit
Power Control mechanisms.
802.11i - Authentication and Security
