NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Sales of handsets in Europe and China surged recently as consumers began purchasing more high-tech phones and concerns over the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome eased.
The two areas have been sources of trepidation for manufacturers fighting sluggish sales.
Handset sales in Europe climbed 10% in June and 14% year-over-year, according to a report by Tim Luke, an analyst with Lehman Brothers Inc. (NYSE:LEH - News) The sales figures were driven by increasing demand for color and camera models. Monthly sales of color phones increased 25%, and monthly sales of integrated camera phones rose 34%, according to the report.
