Chantry Networks Demonstrates New Wireless LAN Solution at EDUCAUSE 2003

EDUCAUSE 2003
Booth #363

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 3, 2003--
VNSWorks(TM) Technology Balances Student, Faculty, Staff and Visitor Wireless Needs; Enables Multiple Virtual Network Uses With One Physical Wireless Network

Chantry Networks, the provider of the world's first large-scale routed wireless LAN (WLAN) solution, the BeaconWorks(TM) family of products, today demonstrated its VNSWorks (Virtual Network Services) technology for educational institutions at EDUCAUSE 2003 in Anaheim, CA. Chantry's VNSWorks technology, which is embedded in BeaconWorks, addresses key requirements for wireless in education by enabling separate virtual networks for students, faculty, staff and visitors over one single physical network - providing enhanced wireless service at a lower cost.

"Educational institutions are leading adopters of wireless technology - both as a result of laptop-equipped students and as a way to attract top students," said Peter Vicars, president and CEO of Chantry Networks. "Yet, while universities and colleges have a significant, demonstrable need for campus-wide wireless services, they also have unique deployment requirements. BeaconWorks addresses both these technology requirements while also providing a secure, cost-effective and easy-to-manage approach to wireless."

As universities and colleges deploy wireless controllers and access points campus-wide, they are faced with equipping dozens of buildings across acres of land. Not only does this present a management and cost challenge, but it also creates a need for scalability. Chantry's solution is not restricted to the 300 meter limitations of competing switch technologies - eliminating the need for a router in every wiring closet. For institutions with multiple buildings - like universities - this significantly reduces both the initial cost and ongoing maintenance cost of the wireless network.

BeaconWorks has no limitations on distance or network topology, and can be scaled dynamically simply by adding additional access points and controllers. The system has the ability to handle wireless traffic for thousands of simultaneous users. And, unlike competing solutions, Chantry's WLAN infrastructure enables organizations to leverage existing wired networks by integrating easily with wired routers and switches. When combined with the ability to provision traffic and segment levels of service, Chantry's BeaconWorks addresses all aspects the of wireless network requirements from universities and colleges.

Chantry's VNSWorks provides secure partitioning of the WLAN network to deliver independent policies and traffic for separate user groups. In the case of the educational industry, students, faculty, staff and visitors can each have a separate subnet, on which their traffic is routed and partitioned. This enables the organization to segment traffic in order to enhance security or enable different classes of services.

Chantry's VNSWorks provides a complete set of tools to manage the infrastructure and client services. It gives the organization the flexibility to modify user policies on the fly, and to take into account variables natural to the wireless environment, such as location and time. VNSWorks has been designed as an extensible platform for centralized management of the inherently fluid wireless environment. VNSWorks completes the wireless LAN, allowing provisioning and management facilities that multiply the value of the WLAN with benefits for network managers and users alike.

Chantry's routed IP architecture--the same architecture that serves as the foundation for the Internet--combined with WLAN virtualization, delivers unprecedented levels of scalability and availability, far in excess of any other WLAN solutions - making the adoption of wireless networking faster, easier, and more cost-effective than ever before.
