OVERLAND PARK, Kan., July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Picture this: You're driving down the highway, going the speed limit, your seatbelt is buckled up and you haven't illegally changed lanes -- yet there is a police car behind you, sirens blaring, beckoning you to pull over. What could be wrong? The cell phone in your hand -- and against your ear -- could be the culprit.
Bluetooth is a convenient way to get you out of that ticket. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that connects devices together, but without that pesky wire in between the two to get in the way. Bluetooth comes built into products consumers use every day -- like cell phones, headsets, PDAs, laptops, and yes, even cars -- and allows devices that have Bluetooth built-in to "talk" to each other without a wire connection.
"If the driver's cell phone and headset both have Bluetooth built-in, the driver could put the headset on, leave the phone in the bag on the backseat, and drive the car with the use of both hands to do all of those other things we do in the car, like change the radio station and adjust the mirror," said Mike McCamon, executive director of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, the trade association responsible for promoting and regulating the wireless technology.
Another way Bluetooth can be used in the car is by connecting the actual car to the driver's -- or passenger's -- Bluetooth enabled cell phone. Just as easy as using the headset with Bluetooth and the phone, this scenario gives the user even more flexibility and freedom: when the car with Bluetooth senses the Bluetooth enabled cell phone in the car, the car's audio system and dash installed controls take over the function of the phone. Calls are made and retrieved using voice recognition, and the user never has to even touch the actual phone.
As the number of auto accidents related to cell phone use continues to climb, many states and even city municipalities are looking closely at legislation designed to keep drivers' hands where they belong -- on the wheel. While New York is currently the only state to have a hands-free cell phone law on the books, California, Massachusetts, and 20 other states will bring the topic up for discussion this fall.
Car manufacturer's like DaimlerChrysler are making Bluetooth available in vehicles coming off the line this fall -- dealer-installed solutions are available now. And if you don't have a Dodge, Jeep, or Chrysler, you're still in luck as there are several after-market car kits for sale from makers like Sony Ericsson, Nokia, and Motorola.
Of course, the key of getting any device to "talk" to another is that they both have to be speaking the same language -- so if you get Bluetooth in your car, you'll want to make sure you have Bluetooth in your cell phone too. Right now, AT&T and T-Mobile both have phones with Bluetooth available for customers, and by the end of the summer, the rest of the major carriers in the US -- Nextel, Sprint, Verizon and Cingular -- are expected to follow suit.
So the next time you're driving along with the phone glued to your ear or you're DWD (driving while dialing), think about Bluetooth -- it can make your life safer, easier, and oh yeah -- ticket free.

Market Research Report Analyzes the Adoption Potential of ZigBee
and the Problems of Adoption and Standardization Within the Industry
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- West Technology Research Solutions, LLC (d.b.a. WTRS), a market research firm focusing solely on emerging technologies, today announced the availability of their newly updated analysis concluding that adoption of ZigBee will be ubiquitous but will take some time to grow.
"The overall potential for ZigBee in low data rate markets has not diminished and demand is building," said Kirsten West, one of the principals of WTRS. "In the not too distant future it will be common to find as many as 50 ZigBee chips in a house. These will be found in light switches, fire and smoke detectors, thermostats, appliances in the kitchen, and video and audio remote controls. The same principles apply to networks in industrial, building automation, and medical markets."
West estimates that by 2006, assuming a 4% global GDP growth, annual shipments for ZigBee chipsets into the home automation segment alone will exceed 46 million units and will grow rapidly thereafter. WTRS forecasts 3 scenarios that are dependent upon global GDP growth projections. These reflect adoption potential in various markets while taking into account the nascence of the technology market and its consequent susceptibility to economic conditions.
The ZigBee Market Report and Analysis provides sales volume, unit shipments, and average selling price by vertical market as well as geography, segmented into three global GDP growth scenarios. In addition, it provides corporate profile information of some of the companies currently developing to the ZigBee protocol. Companies profiled at some length include Adcon Telemetry AG, Agere Systems, AMI Semiconductor, Atmel, Eaton Corporation, Ember Corporation, ENQ Semiconductor, Figure 8 Wireless, Helicomm, Integration Associates, Invensys, Microchip Technology, Millenial Net, Mitsubishi Electronic Industrial, Motorola, and Philips Semiconductors. West Technology Research has also authored definitive studies of Smart Card, Gateway, Wireless Overview, and UltraWideband market potential. Market reports are re-issued on a quarterly schedule, either for one-time purchase, or annual subscription (4 quarterly reports).

Market Research Report Analyzes Effect of UWB Market Potential in the Wireless Component and End Product Industry
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- West Technology Research Solutions, LLC (WTRS), a market research firm focusing solely on emerging technologies, today announced the availability of their newly updated analysis that demonstrates that overall dominance of UWB in the high data rate wireless market place is virtually inevitable.
"Despite its market potential, UWB product release into the market is and will continue to be incremental, in direct relation to overcoming challenges from those industries who are concerned with RF interference issues," said Kirsten West, one of the principals of WTRS. "The throughput potential of UWB being one thousand times greater than 802.11b, and its attribute of supporting a piconet of unlimited size, has the very real potential to displace technologies in LANs, PANs, and ultimately in WANs. A significant number of companies in the technology and communication industry, notably cellular phone handset manufacturers, are fully aware of UWB's immense commercial application, anticipating that UWB will create a wealth of options that likely leave CDMA behind as no longer sufficient."
West estimates that, given a 4% global GDP growth rate, annual shipments for Ultrawideband chipsets into the communications segment alone will exceed 63 million units by 2007. WTRS forecasts 3 scenarios that are dependent upon global GDP growth projections. These reflect adoption potential in various markets while taking into account the nascence of the technology market and its consequent susceptibility to economic conditions.
The Ultrawideband Market Report and Analysis provides sales volume, unit shipments, and average selling price by vertical market as well as geography. In addition, it provides corporate profile information of some of the companies currently developing to the Ultrawideband technology. Market reports are re-issued on a quarterly schedule, either for one-time purchase, or annual subscription (4 quarterly reports). Companies profiled at some length include Adamya Technologies, Aether Wire & Location, AML Communications, Bridgestone Firestone Research, DaimlerChrysler, Datong Electronics, EADS Deutschland GmbH, Efficient Networks, Georadar, Grundig AG, Intel, Lockheed Martin, Motorola, Parco Merged Media, ParthusCeva, RF Technologies, Rhino Analytics, Science Applications International Corporation, Siemens AG, ST Microelectronics, Time Domain, UltraDevices, Volvo Truck North America, XtremeSpectrum, and Zircon. PARIS - Ericsson Technology Licensing is considering developing a
derivative of the Bluetooth standard that would compete against the
nascent Zigbee specification in industrial control and automation
applications-Zigbee's target market. The proposal has set backers of
the two short-range wireless communications technologies at odds, and
some critics said Bluetooth chip suppliers are only trying to
insinuate themselves into a growing market with better margins than
mobile phones.

NEW YORK - So far, the most interesting use for Bluetooth wireless technology to catch on among consumers has been the wireless hands-free headset for mobile phones. But the potential the technology holds is so much greater than that.
The folks at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group are hoping to spread the religion of Bluetooth much further in the coming months, and the place they've chosen to focus on next is in the car.
Sony Ericsson's Bluetooth car kit
It's the next logical step, says Mike McCamon, the industry group's executive director. "70% of all mobile-phone calls are taken inside the vehicle, so I'd think the most natural place for these car kits would be in your automobile," he says. "We see car kits as a key to mainstream consumers."

Everyone who's ever tripped over the wires from their computer can regard the advent of Wi-Fi with pleasure.
Wi-Fi, shorthand for the technology used in wireless local area networks, lets you unhook your PC from wires and surf the Internet from the seductive depths of the living room couch. As a consumer technology, it has much to recommend it: The networks are speedy and relatively easy to set up, and it's getting easier all the time to hook up to wireless networks at hot spots away from home.
Best of all, Wi-Fi doesn't demand a big cash outlay. In fact, the same convergence of competitive forces that have made life tough for small-fry WLAN-chip outfits have been a boon for consumers. As Intel (INTC:Nasdaq - news - commentary - research - analysis) and Texas Instruments (TXN:NYSE - news - commentary - research - analysis) have begun muscling their way into the arena, expect prices to keep dropping, further boosting Wi-Fi's popularity.
