Intermec and IBM Provide Seamless Roaming Between Wireless Wide Area and Local Area Networks
EVERETT, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2003--

IBM WebSphere software gives Intermec ruggedized mobile devices
ability to maintain application connectivity in
different wireless environments
Intermec Technologies today announced that users of its 700 Series mobile computers now can stay connected to applications as they move between wide area and local area wireless networks. IBM's WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager (WECM) software supports Intermec's dual-radio computers to provide seamless roaming that does not require users to log on each time they re-enter network coverage. The Intermec-IBM system continually monitors the airwaves to determine what coverage is available and automatically routes wireless traffic through the lowest-cost network.

Seamless roaming between networks is a major breakthrough in wireless computing because it provides significant cost savings to users by reducing wireless airtime charges and leveraging investments in 802.11b wireless LANs and public-access "hot spot" connection services.

"Route sales managers, delivery personnel, repair technicians can have the best of both wireless worlds with convenient, lower-cost access to two-way communication for dynamic dispatch, workforce management, sales and inventory reporting and other applications," said Clark Richter, Intermec's business development manager for sales force automation and field service. "The value of this capability will increase tremendously as wireless hot spots continue to proliferate and provide even more wireless LAN coverage areas."

"Customers running IBM WebSphere Everyplace Connection Manager software on Intermec computers can look forward to enjoying access to secure information across multiple networks so they can do e-business at any time from virtually any place," said Joe Damassa, vice president, IBM Pervasive Computing Division.

The 700 Series is the first handheld computer line to offer wireless roaming. IBM's WECM solution allows session persistence over any of the radio options available in the Intermec 700 Series, including GPRS, CDMA, or IEEE 802.11b. The 700 Series also supports Bluetooth wireless for short-range connectivity between computers and peripherals, and can simultaneously support all three forms of wireless communication in a single device. Intermec's SymPhone option allows workers to use their 700 Series computers to make voice-over-IP (VoIP) phone calls over wireless LANs.

"Our customers demand flexible solutions that provide immediate business value and still allow them to grow. The ability to maintain session persistence over diverse wireless networks is an extremely powerful building block for creating mobile enterprise applications that solve business problems today and can take advantage of emerging wireless opportunities," said Kevin Moore, Intermec's business development manager for transportation and logistics.

Intermec's 700 Series already has become a favorite with workers whose daily shifts require powerful, reliable and easy-to-use handheld computers that can take the abuse of industrial, mobile and retail environments. Its optional scanning technologies offer reliable and accurate data and image collection, and its market-leading battery capacity ensures up to 10 hours of operation between recharging.

Motorola and NEC to Collaborate on Wireless Voice and Data Solution; Solution to Allow Roaming Between WLAN and Cellular Networks

IRVING, Texas and and ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 2003--NEC America, Inc. (NEC) and Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced their intent to collaborate on the development of a converged Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and cellular communication solution to create potential cost savings opportunities, improved user efficiencies and new capabilities for enterprise customers.
The convergence of voice and data networks, both wired and wireless, can bring contiguous voice and data service to users across enterprise networks, public cellular networks, and public hotspot WLANs based on 802.11 technologies (commonly referred to as WiFi). The solution will be enabled by integrating Motorola's core seamless mobility components with NEC's WLAN infrastructure and NEAX(R) family of enterprise communication platforms. Motorola's components include a dual system WiFi/cellular phone and mobility manager that controls the hand-off between local (WLAN) and cellular networks and dispatch functions.

The solution enables enterprises to achieve cost savings through reduced network management expenses, lower usage charges and device consolidation. User efficiencies may be realized through increased accessibility to the business network and greater mobility through seamless wireless access within or outside the enterprise network. Planned capabilities include mobile access to key business applications such as email, calendars, corporate directories and enterprise SMS coverage.

The companies will work together towards definitive agreements that will allow them to leverage industry standards such as WiFi and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) to deliver a flexible, cost-effective communication solution that will provide wireless voice and data communications over IP inside an enterprise or visited WLAN and over public wireless services outside the enterprise. The planned solution will combine features and benefits of each network and enable them to operate in both environments. Users should be able to seamlessly roam between networks, bringing the mobility of cellular networks inside the enterprise and providing the best available access to users.

"We are very pleased to be collaborating with NEC. Together we are seeking to deliver a communication solution that converges cellular networks with WLANs accessed with a single handset," said Nicholas Labun, vice president and general manager for Motorola's WLAN Seamless Mobility Business. "This is an exciting step towards realizing Motorola's vision of extending mobility from the network to the person."

"Teaming with Motorola to seamlessly extend the enterprise into the wide area mobile network is a critical component of NEC's real-time solution," said Mike Rosen, general manager of NEC America's Marketing and Sales Support Division. "Converging cellular and WLAN networks on a single handset addresses a significant need and adds greater value for our customers."

Financial details of the agreement are not being disclosed. General availability for the solution is targeted for the second half of 2004.
