Motorola Delivers Its First in a Series of CDMA Push-To-Talk Handsets

Thursday August 14, 9:10 am ET

New Motorola V60p Leverages Motorola's Leadership and Heritage in Push-To-Talk Technology and Design

LIBERTYVILLE, Ill., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News), a global leader in wireless communications, today announced the arrival of its first CDMA 1X mobile phone with push-to-talk (PTT) technology -- the model V60p. This introduction builds on Motorola's heritage as a push-to-talk technology leader and marks the delivery of the first CDMA handset to complement the recently announced Motorola CDMA 1X PTT infrastructure server.
The new model V60p leverages the design strength of one of the most popular mobile phones in the country to answer the call from thousands of mobile phone users demanding nationwide communication at the touch of one button. Additionally, the Motorola V60p offers new revenue and consumer retention opportunities with a valuable new service.

"In our fast paced world, the increased demand for speedy communication is no surprise. With the new Motorola V60p we are able to satisfy this mobile craving for consumers both in and out of the enterprise arena with one of the best looking handset designs on the market," said Tim Cawley, senior vice- president and general manager, Motorola's Personal Communications Sector. "Sixty-five years ago Motorola pioneered push-to-talk communications with the introduction of the first two-way radio and our leadership continues as the model V60p marks the first in a new wave of wireless PTT enabled devices for CDMA and GSM networks."

Motorola's V60p push-to-talk handset allows mobile phone users to communicate with one or many individuals at the touch of a button. By using the push-to-talk button located on the side of the Motorola V60p, consumers can reach single contacts or participate in group chats via user-specified work groups.

The smart icon-driven contact list of the compact Motorola V60p allows users to identify callers with one quick glance. Complete with an integrated high-audio speakerphone, external caller ID, ability to push-to-talk with one or many and downloading capabilities, the Motorola V60p delivers all the communication, entertainment and organizational features that today's consumer needs to stay on track and connected while on-the-go.

The introduction of the Motorola V60p is the first handset in a series of CDMA push-to-talk handsets that Motorola will deliver over the next year.

The Motorola V60p will be available first at Verizon Wireless locations nationwide as well as at www.verizonwireless.com starting the week of August 18, 2003 for a suggested retail price of $149.99 with a Verizon Wireless two- year contract. Push-to-talk communications is a network dependent feature and requires a subscription to a push-to-talk service plan.

About Socket's Products Using Bluetooth Wireless Technology

Socket's CompactFlash Card and KwikBlue Bluetooth modules were designed for integration into PDAs, peripherals, industrial automation equipment, and many other products. The CompactFlash Card and KwikBlue modules coupled with Socket's field-proven software protocol stack and value-added integration services are ideal for companies that want to add Bluetooth cordless connectivity to their product solutions. Design wins already field-tested or going into production include PDAs, mobile printers, serial dongles, industrial automation equipment, bar code scanning, and conference room whiteboard connectivity. Socket's Bluetooth products are version 1.1 qualified by the Bluetooth Qualification Body (BQB), and the KwikBlue modules have FCC Modular Approval. FCC Modular Approval is essentially a pre-approval of most of the required FCC testing and simplifies the FCC certification process for companies seeking to integrate Bluetooth wireless connectivity into their products.

KwikBlue modules are available in Surface Mount Device (SMD) packaging as well as highly integrated small footprint board-to-board connectible packages with an on-board antenna. The basic integrated package includes the KwikBlue SMD module for easy "drop-in design" to existing products. Socket offers complete design-in engineering services that can supply variations of the basic package to meet customer specifications for functionality and space limitations. Special features include Socket's field upgradeable connectivity implementation, special purpose "Virtual Machines" (embedded customized user applications and interfaces), software configuration, power management, external antenna connections, and more. Etenna Announces New Quad-Band Antenna With Full Coverage for 802.11a/b/g and Bluetooth(TM)
Small Form Factor of the EE5801 EdgeWave(TM) Antenna Enables It to Fit Into the Industry's Thinnest Laptop Computers

LAUREL, Md., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Etenna Corporation, an antenna developer for commercial wireless applications, today announced the availability of its new EE5801 EdgeWave(TM) quad-band antenna designed for wireless area networks (WLANs), Bluetooth(TM) personal area networks (PANs) and the new 4.9 to 5.0 GHz WLAN bands in Japan.

The EdgeWave antenna is optimized for use along the top or side of a notebook computer screen, although other applications are possible. Unlike Etenna's AccuWave(TM) antenna products -- which are surface mounted to a board -- the EdgeWave antenna is shipped with a cable, connector and mounting option that can easily be customized to the specific user requirements. Like the AccuWave antenna, the EdgeWave antenna is built using a high precision, low-cost insert molding technology, which provides exceptional unit-to-unit repeatability. No custom tooling is required as the antenna element of the assembly can support all applications and environments in exactly the same form factor.

Etenna offers a standard group of tuned antennas and an assortment of cables, connectors and mounting brackets. This will enable customers to order a semi-custom product from standard components. Etenna's EdgeWave customers can now eliminate expensive tooling, shorten lead times, and greatly reduce the testing and evaluation process.

"Our new EdgeWave technology uses a patent-pending process that results in a low-cost, high performance antenna that is 40% thinner than the thinnest laptop display screen available," said Etenna's executive vice president Greg Mendolia. "And our beta customers are already telling us that the high level of standardization we are offering will allow them to reduce their integration time by half."

The EdgeWave antenna is 3 mm wide x 30 mm long x 5 mm high and operates in the 2.4-2.48 and 4.9-5.9 GHz frequency ranges with a minimum efficiency of greater than 70%. The antenna features typical values of 250 MHz of 10 dB return loss bandwidth for the low band and 1.5 GHz of 10 dB return loss bandwidth for the high band.

Mounting brackets come in a variety of styles and sizes. For customers with demanding space requirements a clip-style connector that does not require screws is available. Cable lengths between 300 mm and 900 mm are also available.

Volume production will be available at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2003. For orders of 10,000 units or more the EE5801 EdgeWave antenna is priced at $1.75, which includes the cable and connector. For higher volume pricing please contact info@etenna.com .
