Hong Kong Government Sees New 3G Standard Replacing CDMA,TDMA Spectrum: "Hong Kong Government Sees New 3G Standard Replacing CDMA,TDMA Spectrum
Friday March 19, 7:14 am ET
HONG KONG -(Dow Jones)- The Hong Kong government Friday said it proposes to issue a new third-generation telecommunications license for the spectrum vacated by two older technologies when the licenses for that spectrum expire next year.

The telecommunications regulator, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority, known as OFTA, wants to replace the two older standards with CDMA2000, a 3G standard with bandwidth big enough to offer video telephony and other data-intensive services.
'This will allow consumers to enjoy services and mobile phones or devices that have become successful and popular in places like Japan and South Korea,' said Marion Lai, the Deputy Secretary for Commerce, Industry & Technology ( Communications & Technology).
Hong Kong already offers a 3G technology, however. The Hutchison Communications unit of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. offers a 3G technology called W-CDMA, or wideband code division multiple access, developed in Europe and backed by Nokia Corp. (NYSE:NOK - News) ."

CEBIT-Move over 3G, here comes WiMAX: "CEBIT-Move over 3G, here comes WiMAX
Friday March 19, 8:06 am ET

By Lucas van Grinsven, European Technology Correspondent
HANOVER, Germany, March 19 (Reuters) - Just when mobile operators are finally getting their costly third-generation (3G) networks up and running, a new wireless technology pushed by the computer industry is about to mess things up.

At stake are tens of billions of euros in mobile telecoms revenues, as semiconductor giant Intel (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) is putting its formidable weight behind WiMAX, a powerful wireless technology that gives fixed-line telecoms carriers a weapon to hit back at the mobile rivals who have long been eating into their voice revenues.
WiMAX, an industry standard that travels under the alternative name '802.16', and is also backed by Finland's mobile phones and networks vendor Nokia (NOK1V.HE), offers lightning fast wireless data communications over distances as far as 50 kilometres.

Compare that with the first 3G networks which, although much faster than today's mobile phone networks, are 30 times slower than WiMAX, and one 3G radio mast covers an area 10 times smaller than WiMAX."

Motorola Successful Deployment for Enterprise WiFi in Italy
Friday March 19, 3:30 am ET

HANNOVER, Germany, March 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola Inc.'s Global Telecom Solution Sector (GTSS) today announced it has worked with TIM, the wireless arm of Telecom Italia Group, to provide an end to end WiFi solution. Motorola's WiFi system is part of the corporate wireless service portfolio which TIM offers to the enterprises throughout Italy.

Motorola was chosen by TIM to co-design, deploy and support a hybrid WiFi system for private as well as public WiFi users within the enterprise. The private network provides wireless Internet and intranet access to employees, while the public network gives wireless Internet access to visitors such as consultants, suppliers and customers. Users can benefit from broadband speed connectivity without the need for a wired connection.

The system proposed by Motorola was chosen by TIM as it could be easily integrated with TIM's existing user authentication solution (SIM Based Authentication). Motorola is also specifically responsible for providing the WiFi hardware and software and managing the installation, deployment and ongoing maintenance of the system at TIM's customer sites.

Margaret Rice-Jones, corporate vice president of Motorola Inc. and general manager, Motorola GTSS EMEA, said: "As enterprises demand more flexibility from their employees and partners, in turn the need for flexible connectivity within the enterprise becomes paramount. By working with TIM to offer both public and private WiFi systems within enterprises, Motorola is addressing this need and demonstrating its commitment to the EMEA market for all types of wireless infrastructure."

The system Motorola designed is divided into three areas: the radio network, which includes WiFi access points and cards; the core network, which includes routers and firewalls; and cabling, which will be provided by TIM.

Complexity, Security Makes It Harder for Wireless Computer Networking Products to Connect
HANOVER, Germany (AP) -- Increasing complexity and stronger security is making it harder for new wireless computer networking products to hook up with each other, an industry group promoting the technology said Thursday at the CeBIT tech fair.

The Wi-Fi Alliance said that 22 percent of the devices -- such as wireless networking cards for computers, access ports and printer servers -- submitted for testing at its four partner laboratories failed to work on a network on the first try.
The group certifies Wi-Fi equipment in an attempt to help the technology grow, by sparing consumers hair-pulling experiences as they try to use Wi-Fi-enabled laptops or handheld computers to wirelessly surf the Web at coffee shops and airports. The Wi-Fi Alliance has certified 1,100 devices since 2000."
