Symbol Technologies Declared Wireless Switch Market Share Leader
Wednesday March 31, 8:30 am ET
Symbol Branch Office WS 2000 Wireless Switch Receives Industry Analyst Accolades, Wins Wi-FiPower Best in Show Award

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 2004-- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL - News), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), was named the No. 1 market share leader for enterprise class wireless switches by Infonetics Research and Synergy Research Group, Inc.

Symbol also announced today that it has been presented with the Gordon & Associates Wi-FiPower Best in Show Award for the new WS 2000 Wireless Switch branch office solution. The Wi-FiPower Best in Show Award recognizes vendors whose products and services demonstrate wireless technology innovation and product excellence.

"The enterprise and channel momentum created by the market acceptance of wireless switch architectures has improved Symbol's overall wireless LAN market share position," said Aaron Vance, Senior Analyst, Synergy Research Group. "We anticipate that Symbol will be able to execute on its plans and take advantage of the enterprise mobility market growth going forward."

"While the wireless LAN switch market is at an early stage of development, reaching $12.8M for 4Q03, with 51 percent growth over the previous quarter, Infonetics forecasts that this market will show strong double-digit growth over the coming year and beyond as wireless LANs penetrate further into the enterprise," said Richard Webb, Directing Analyst, Wireless LANs for Infonetics Research. "Symbol leads the wireless LAN switch market so far, and having recently expanded its switch portfolio, the company is well positioned to drive and capitalize on the expected growth curve."

In 2003, the Symbol WS 5000 Wireless Switch was deployed to "early adopter" customers across various industries by direct sales and through Symbol Business Partners. Symbol recently expanded its wireless infrastructure portfolio with the introduction of the WS 2000 Wireless Switch for branch office networking.

In the public space arena, T-Systems, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) services division of Deutsche Telekom, selected the WS 5000 over traditional wireless access points to power the permanent Wi-Fi "hot spot" that blankets 27 exhibition halls and 5.3 million square feet (450,0000 square meters) of space at the Deutsche Messe convention center in Hannover, Germany. Each year, this convention center attracts roughly 500,000 international visitors for the CeBit trade show and exhibition.

In retail and manufacturing, several enterprise customers deployed the WS 5000 to provide wireless Internet access in office locations, in addition to serving as the wireless infrastructure for mobile computing applications within store and plant operations.

Several hospitals, including Adventist Health, Erlanger Medical Center, and Hospital Univisitario La Paz (Madrid, Spain), chose the Symbol wireless switch over traditional wireless access points to drive the adoption of advanced mobile healthcare applications. In the education market, "green-field" Wi-Fi deployments featured the Symbol wireless switch at numerous universities, including Temple University, New York Institute of Technology, and the University of Portsmouth (UK).

"Customers are seeing that the Symbol wireless infrastructure delivers prudent investment protection and critical mobility features with lower operation and capital equipment costs," said Anthony Bartolo, Symbol vice president and general manager of the wireless infrastructure division. "Our customers are basing their mission critical applications on our wireless switch infrastructures. We are generating favorable reception from our WS 2000 'wireless-office-in-a-box' solution targeting branch offices and remote locations."

More than sixteen companies shipped enterprise WLAN equipment in 2003. However, according to the Synergy Research report, Symbol is the only company that provides customers both traditional access points and wireless switches with "light" access points. In fact, Symbol is also the only company that produces and delivers a comprehensive portfolio of advanced data capture devices, mobile computers, wireless infrastructure, and mobility management software.

Symbol plans to sustain support for traditional access points as customers migrate to the Symbol reference architecture for enterprise mobility. Symbol's Wireless Switch portfolio information is available at: www.symbol.com/switch.

Tuesday March 30, 10:00 am ET
SITA and Cisco Systems Collaborate to Implement Joint Solution to Streamline Operations, Improve Security and Drive New Services

TORONTO & SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 2004-- Cisco Systems® and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) today announced that a Cisco® Intelligent Airport Solution will form the foundation to deliver dramatic operational and passenger benefits, making the new $4.4 billion (CAD) terminal at Toronto Pearson International Airport a next generation showcase for airports around the world.

Cisco Intelligent Airport Solutions -- a flexible, scalable and intelligent network solution specifically designed for the air transportation industry -- will help enable the GTAA to converge 14 separate networks and 11 information silos into a single, more secure network at the new terminal. This resilient communications infrastructure integrates data, voice and video to benefit the airport, airlines, travelers, tenants and partners. By integrating Cisco's networking solutions with SITA's new AirportConnect platform, the GTAA is able to make the promise of a common-use facility a reality, supporting both dedicated and shared-use systems including baggage and passenger processing.

"Airport executives are under heavy pressure to provide secure transportation while reducing costs, implementing new business processes and driving new services," said James Burke, vice president, Information Technology and Telecommunications at the GTAA. "We view the network as the foundation of our business and operations strategy to create a secure common-communications infrastructure, enable new applications, and offer a service-oriented environment for the airport."

"Cisco has worked closely with the GTAA to establish the new Terminal 1 as a world-class facility. As a result of our collaboration, the airport of the future is here today," said Terry Walsh, president of Cisco Systems Canada. "By providing technology, services and vision, Cisco is helping the GTAA drive new levels of efficiency, security and responsiveness for the air transportation industry."

"Working with GTAA and Cisco, SITA has created a truly open-system IT platform supporting the cost and efficiency advantages of a shared-use community, while accommodating the flexibility and control of a dedicated one," said John Jarrell, senior vice president, Airport and Desktop Services, SITA INC. "With Cisco Intelligent Airport Solutions and SITA's AirportConnect passenger processing, self-service kiosks, and integrated baggage solutions, GTAA becomes the leader in airport IT systems."

New revenues and services: Offer customized services that integrate voice, video and data to airlines, travelers and tenants.
Network security, resiliency and responsiveness: Protect against internal and external network and data infrastructure threats and outages.
Cisco Intelligent Airport Solutions:

Cisco has designed this set of networking business solutions for the air transportation industry that provides a cohesive, resilient, and responsive airport operating environment. Cisco Intelligent Airport Solutions help enable the following:

Security Solutions

Physical Security: Networks for video surveillance and access control systems.
Emergency Response: Wired and wireless communications network to help enable security personnel to communicate rapidly with passengers, airlines, government agencies or personnel, and first responders.
