Higuera The Arizona Republic Apr. 11, 2004 12:00 AM The Phoenix metro area registered the nation's second-largest non-farm job gain in February, with 37,200 more jobs than during February 2003, the federal government reported Friday. The Valley trailed only the Washington, D.C., metro area for total job gains. The D.C. area recorded nearly 55,000 new jobs, bringing its total labor force to about 2.9 million. The Phoenix labor force was 1.8 million. A helpful person in India or Mexico answers. Under a seven-year contract totaling $30 million, calls from Arizona go either to an automated answer line, where most questions are resolved without human intervention, or to call centers abroad, where low-wage labor cuts the cost of providing live responses. Gov. Janet Napolitano's office learned of the foreign staffing, known as outsourcing, only several weeks ago and is researching ways to end the practice now if possible and prohibit it in the future, co-chief of staff Alan Stephens said Wednesday. ~ Wednesday, April 07, 2004
