Labor Department Announces Expansion of GovBenefits.gov

Free, Confidential Website Helps Americans Determine Eligibility For Hundreds of Government-Funded Benefits
The U.S Department of Labor recently announced a major expansion to www.GovBenefits.gov

This groundbreaking government-to-citizen e-Gov initiative is celebrating its second anniversary.

The free, confidential website helps citizens determine their potential eligibility for more than 500 government-funded benefit and assistance programs. Expanded state-level information will now provide American citizens with a broader range of benefits information and allow local community-based organizations to better assess eligibility for programs.

Since the site was launched in April 2002, GovBenefits.gov has provided government benefit eligibility information to more than 11 million visitors and generated more than 1.8 million citizen referrals to benefit programs tailored to their needs. It features more than 500 federal and state benefit programs.

The most popular agencies where GovBenefits.gov refers citizens include:

1. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
2. U.S. Department of Education
3. U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
4. U.S. Department of Agriculture
5. U.S. Department of Labor

GovBenefits.gov is the collaborative effort of ten federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Labor (managing partner), Agriculture, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, State, Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Administration.

The New Workplace Challenges
Tara Murphy, 05.14.04, 7:00 AM ET

Yet there is a whole new set of challenges facing the global marketplace, with offshoring being No. 1. The belief that offshoring is robbing jobs from the U.S. labor market is causing talk about protectionist policies, and historically the argument coincides with debate during U.S. presidential campaigns about the loss of manufacturing jobs, says Betsy Bernard, former AT&T (nyse: T - news - people ) president and a director at Principal Financial Group (nyse: PFG - news - people ) and United Technologies (nyse: UTX - news - people ).
