MSNBC - Quitting Time Quitting Time Companies are hiring again, and guess who's applying? Burned-out workers who already have jobs but are looking for a fresh start By Daniel McGinn NewsweekMay 24 issue - Come along, folks, for a journey into the jungle of the American workplace. Today we're hunting an elusive creature, one that was quite common five years ago but has rarely been seen in recent times. You may recognize him by his suit?4he's dressed just a tad too formally today, as if he has an important meeting outside the building. Or maybe we'll catch a glimpse of that telltale stationery peeking out from his desk?4the heavy, ivory stock that's a giveaway he's been printing resumes. Wait?4quiet?4here's one now. She's a 39-year-old lab technician in the Midwest. Co-workers haven't noticed (she hopes), but lately she's displaying behaviors characteristic of the covert job hunter. Technology market researcher Forrester said in a report titled 'Near-Term Growth of Offshoring Accelerating' that it expects the number of U.S. business service and software jobs moving offshore to reach 588,000 in 2004 from 315,000 in 2003. The loss of U.S. software programing, customer call-center and even legal paperwork positions should rise to 830,000 jobs by 2005, up 40 percent over this year, the report said. 3 Valley cities outsource tax setups to India 3 Valley cities outsource tax setups to India Edythe Jensen and Alia Beard Rau The Arizona Republic May. 17, 2004 12:00 AM Shop locally and keep those sales-tax dollars at home has been a routine pitch made by Valley cities dependent on the penny or two of municipal sales tax charged on every dollar spent within their borders. But three Valley cities are spending more than $2.8 million in tax dollars abroad to collect those sales levies. Tempe is spending $1.3 million, Peoria $830,000 and Chandler $727,995 to an Indian conglomerate called Tata Infotech to create city sales-tax collection and business-licensing systems. The Chandler City Council voted 5-2 Thursday to make the deal. Peoria and Chandler are using Tempe's 2001 contract; neither sought public bids or proposals. | |
