Forbes.com: Sky-High Wi-Fi
Even by Moore's Law standards, you'd be hard-pressed to name a technology that tops Wi-Fi when it comes to skyrocketing usefulness, ubiquity and performance, while price tumbles.
Wi-Fi is shorthand for wireless fidelity. It lets users connect to the Internet at high speeds without cables, whether they're on a couch at home, in a conference room at work or, increasingly, somewhere in between. Wi-Fi is based on a technology standard, the geeky-sounding IEEE 802.11b, approved only in September 1999 and since souped up to version 802.11g. The more secure 802.11i is due later this year.

July 1999 was a milestone in electronic liberation.
That's when Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) debuted the Airport, the first cheap Wi-Fi base station that gave people--or at least the blessed few who used Macintosh computers--fast, wireless access to the Web. Freed from clunky cables and connectors, PC users of all stripes are now fundamentally changing how, where and why they get online. Inexpensive to install and maintain, Wi-Fi networks are becoming ubiquitous. In less than five short years the number of U.S. households with a Wi-Fi network has gone from zero to 4.3 million, and you can barely pass a street corner in any big U.S. city without seeing a public Wi-Fi hot spot.
MSNBC - Something in the Air
In the '90s, people went bananas over wireless. Electronic communications once thought to be permanently bound to the world of cables and hard-wired connections suddenly were sprung free, and the possibilities seemed endless. Entrenched monopolies would fall, and a new uncabled era would usher in a level of intimate contact that would not only transform business but change human behavior. Such was the view by the end of that groundbreaking decade—the 1890s.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT - News) Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm used in its Canopy wireless broadband radios has been certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to meet government Federal Information Processing Standard-197 (FIPS-197) for ensuring secure data communication.
AES is the highest level of encryption available to the public. According to the NIST, based on certain assumptions it would take 149 trillion years to crack the code to access data being transmitted with AES 128-bit encryption. http://csrc.nist.gov/cryptval/aes/aesval.html . The encryption algorithm is used by government agencies (including the United States military) and the private sector (including financial institutions and medical facilities) and others that want to protect personal or sensitive data from computer hackers.
The Canopy radio with AES capability is the second Motorola product and the 150th product in the world that earned FIPS-197 certification.
"Secure communications are a specialized need for many public and private entities, from government agencies to law enforcement to banking. Certification of our AES algorithm provides assurance to those customers that the Canopy solution meets the government's rigorous standards," said Tom Gruba, director of marketing and customer support for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband group.

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- More affordable, easy-to-deploy wireless broadband equipment is providing flexible opportunities for companies providing Internet connectivity to businesses, enterprises and residences. As a result, more end-users are experiencing "always on" connectivity, regardless of their location.
Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News) today announced that it added additional support for the residential Internet business case by reducing the price of its Canopy customer premise equipment (CPE) and making broadband connectivity more affordable.
The price reduction for Canopy's volume packs called MOTOBUNDLES is one example of how Motorola is meeting market demand. Motorola's suggested retail price for a pack of 500 CPEs (2.4GHz, 5.2GHz and 5.7GHz,) is now $250 per unit; for a 100-pack it is $300 per unit and for a 50-pack it is $350 per unit.
"We are committed to the long-term success of both our wireless and wireline customers who are bringing affordable voice, media and data-rich services to people wherever they are," said Tony Kobrinetz, vice president and general manager of Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband group. "Our expertise and experience in wireless broadband networks help our service provider create profitable revenue models."
Wireless service providers need to remain competitive with solutions that provide reliable connectivity while being cost-effective. The Canopy solution positions these providers for positive returns on their investment in less than 18 months in most cases.
"The new Canopy MOTOBUNDLE pricing allows Fox Valley Internet to offer the CPE units at no cost to customers who sign a service agreement. This means our customers can receive faster Internet connectivity speeds for a lower monthly fee than currently is being offered by the phone and cable companies operating in the area," said Paul Diem, president of Fox Valley Internet of Elgin, Ill. Diem said his company competes with one DSL (digital subscriber line) and three cable companies in the service area that encompasses west suburban Chicago communities.
For smaller carriers and cable operators, Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband solution can allow them to extend their existing service without the higher costs of traditional network equipment and the expense of conditioning telephone lines or upgrading cable.

Smaller, Power-Efficient Solutions will Drive Wi-Fi into Consumer Electronics, Mobile Devices and Broadband Home Networking Applications
TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Home networking, enterprise networking and public hotspots have fueled the growth of Wi-Fi networking over the last several years noted D. R. 'Randy' Roberson, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE: TXN - News; TI) general manager of Wireless Networking, during his keynote address to hundreds of industry executives attending Computex Digitimes Forum 2004. Roberson explained that more power efficient, smaller solutions are driving embedded WLAN into new applications for consumer electronics, broadband access and mobile devices. You can access Roberson's keynote presentation online at http://www.ti.com/computex2004 .
"WLAN growth opportunities are bigger than ever with the entrance of embedded Wi-Fi connecting consumer electronic devices, home networks and wireless handsets. Analysts are predicting that Wi-Fi connectivity in networked consumer electronic devices could reach approximately 40 percent by 2008(1). We believe that this percentage could be much higher since this is an emerging market for WLAN growth," explained Roberson. "Asian manufacturers are important to the success of WLAN worldwide, and TI is committed to helping grow the Wi-Fi market through key partnerships in Asia and our local design and support teams."
Roberson noted that the WLAN market has grown tremendously over the past four years, and TI has fueled much of this growth by delivering innovative products that are optimized for integration. In 2003, TI shipped over 14 Million WLAN ports, a 350 percent increase over 2002. TI is integrating this WLAN innovation with its complete broadband portfolio of cable modem, DSL and voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) products, providing system-level solutions for the next generation of broadband equipment. With over 270 million broadband subscribers expected worldwide by 2008(2) WLAN will be at the center of everyone's network.
Roberson emphasized that in addition to its extensive broadband capabilities, TI combines its expertise in wireless technologies and digital consumer electronics to bring new features and capabilities to cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and other consumer devices that connect people seamlessly from the office, home, public places and schools. New WLAN standards will also drive the proliferation of Wi-Fi connected mobile devices. The introduction of 802.11n will provide greater throughput for new applications that require higher bandwidth, and 802.11e will increase quality of service and drive WLAN video and voice services.
Closing his address, Roberson offered TI's forward looking vision for a converged wireless world -- TI envisions that all consumer electronics, homes and offices will have a wireless connection, allowing seamless communication with any device over any network, anywhere, anytime.
About Roberson
Roberson recently joined TI to head its Wireless Networking Business Unit as part of the company's Broadband Communications Group. Prior to his position at TI, he has held several senior executive positions at Motorola Digital Communications Division, General Instruments, IBM, AT&T/Paradyne Personal Communications Products and most recently Tantivy Communications. As the WLAN general manager, Roberson is responsible for the overall business including strategy, R&D, silicon, systems and software product development, marketing and customer support.
TI at Computex
TI will exhibit at booth T203AB in hall 4 (TICC) during Computex Taipei, held June 1-5. CALGARY, CANADA and MANTSALA, FINLAND--(CCNMatthews - June 1, 2004) -
Roughly the geographic size of New York City, MSOYNET X network combines Wi-LAN's patented W-OFDM broadband wireless technology for backhaul with Radionet's Wi-Fi Hotzone technology for last mile-connections
ADVERTISEMENT
Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN - News), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Radionet Oy, a leading supplier of Wi-Fi Hotzone technology, today announced the sale of broadband wireless equipment for the expansion of the Mantsala regional wireless network in southern Finland. Owned and operated by the local energy company Mantsalan Sahko, the expanded Mantsala network will cover an area of over 800 km2, roughly the size of New York City, in the Municipality of Mantsala as well as neighboring cities and municipalities. Upon its completion in early June the new network, MSOYNET X will cover a population of over 60,000 people. In addition to regional population centers, the network also brings wireless broadband connections and adds Wi-Fi connectivity to sparsely populated areas.
"The combination of Wi-LAN's and Radionet's technology enables us to cover the whole of Mantsala - private households, local companies, the Mantsala municipal authority, as well as rural areas, where also farms can benefit from wireless broadband connections," said Vesa Selikare, Director, Networks, Mantsalan Sahko. "After looking into the alternatives on the marketplace, the combination of Wi-LAN and Radionet products proved to be by far the best solution for us. Wi-LAN's equipment provides the high-capacity non-line-of-sight capabilities that are needed for backhaul and customers who need high bandwidth. Radionet's robust outdoor equipment provides users with ubiquitous broadband and Wi-Fi access within the coverage area."
MSOYNET X combines licensed frequency technology from Wi-LAN for wireless backhaul with Radionet's license-free technology for last mile connections. The network utilizes Wi-LAN's LIBRA 3000 W-OFDM based non-line-of-sight (NLOS) broadband wireless products and Radionet's Wi-Fi broadband wireless equipment. Additional sales of Wi-LAN and Radionet products are expected to follow as Mantsalan Sahko expands the network with additional base stations.
In addition to broadband services to households and companies in the region, Mantsalan Sahko, as a member of a coalition of Finnish WISP's (Wireless Internet Service Providers), offers roaming services between citywide Wi-Fi Hotzones in Finland as well as instant access services to visitors.
"Mantsalan Sahko has been one of the pioneers in adopting new wireless broadband technologies. Established in 2000, the company's wireless broadband network has been a commercial success, and Mantsalan Sahko has achieved a market-leading position in broadband Internet access in the region. The Mantsala network demonstrates that by using licensed wireless technology for backhaul connections and license-free Wi-Fi technology for end user access, large wireless broadband networks can be built quickly and cost-effectively," said Henry Valtonen, Director of Sales and Marketing, Radionet.
Mantsalan Sahko is protected by the Wi-LAN CONTINUITY PROGRAM(TM), which offers customers who deploy Wi-LAN's Libra series broadband wireless systems a clear migration path to Wi-LAN's Wi-MAX Certified(1) systems, expected to be available in the first half of 2005.
"Our CONTINUITY PROGRAM allows Mantsalan Sahko to extend the network in a non-disruptive way with our new WiMAX Certified systems as they become available. The CONTINUITY PROGRAM will minimize network and revenue disruption and protect customers' investment in current Libra technology when networks are transitioned to WiMAX Certified equipment. With the proactive use of new network technology, the Mantsalan network illustrates how WISP's can create robust and reliable wireless broadband networks with the performance of future WiMAX Certified networks using technology available today," said Adrian Wheeler, Regional Director, Europe, Wi-LAN Inc.
"This model of deployment solves, in a very elegant way, the provisioning of a very low cost CPE for residential applications. The Mantsalan Sahko network is at the leading edge of technology. We see growing demand for these kind of roll-outs, not only in Finland but globally, and Wi-LAN and its partners will be there to serve them," said Nico Roelofsen, V.P., Global Sales for Wi-LAN Inc.
The MSOYNET X network features QoS (Quality of Service) functionality, which enables Mantsalan Sahko to provide its customers with constant performance levels and Radionet's MageIP technology, which enables seamless subnet switching for reliability and improved connection speed. The network also features advanced security features such as VPN and AES.
Inspired by the success of the MSOYNET X network, Mantsalan Sahko and municipalities in the mid-Uusimaa region are exploring the possibility of extending the wireless broadband network to the cities and municipalities of Kerava, Jarvenpaa, Tuusula and Nurmijarvi. These have a combined population of over 150,000 inhabitants.
