From: Yuvraj Khanna Date: Tue Jun 1, 2004 10:09am Subject: Multiple Engineering openings (Enterprise Application/ UI Developers)in Peninsula/CA
Please direct your responses to: raj@s...
Company and Product: Our client was founded in 2001. They have secured 2 rounds of funding, for a total of $30 million. There is still $20 million in the bank, which is going to last them until 2007. They are funded by leading VCs
Most corporations are build on the concept of putting documents into one place, however, usually only about 25% is stored in a central database, the other 75% is stored on desktops, laptops, network servers, etc. Their software helps companies to manage this, but gives the company control of the data, regardless of where it is located.
The have filed 49 patents to date.
Architecture and Technologies: Their product is enterprise based. The backend is a database (Oracle) and an app server (Jboss) and the front end is a windows client. The policies that are implemented for a company reside on the server and then the windows client applies those policies to the content. Essentially there is an agent that resides on each client that will upload any new policies that are established.
The technologies that are used: Server: Jboss, Oracle, java, EJB, J2EE, HTML, DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Struts/Tapestry, design patterns, distributed, redundancy, failover, scalability, stateless interface for scalability, deployed on 2000, 2003, and Linux. Client: Win32 APIs, MFC, COM/DCOM, C++, VC++, OO, system applications, understand interfacing to network protocols, deployed on 2000 and XP, web services interface. Positions: Server Group: UI Engineer: Java web application designer with experience in rapid prototyping and incorporating usability feedback as part of an iterative design process, a minimum of 5 years experience is needed. Web development skills should include HTML, DHTML, JavaScript, CSS; Java development skills should include Java, J2EE, JSP, Servlets, Jakarta Struts or Tapestry (they use Tapestry). Strong object-oriented design and programming skills, especially the MVC pattern, are preferred. Prior style guide ownership and usability testing are also important. This person will have a leadership role in how the design is done. They will be interfacing with marketing and customers. They will deal with issues of scalability and how the user interacts with the server.
Enterprise application developer: Enterprise application software developer with 7 years prior experience and expertise in designing and developing enterprise apps such as ERP, CRM, HR, or similar Web-based applications. Development skills must include Java, J2EE, EJB, JNDI, JAAS, JMS, and JDBC with strong object-oriented design and programming skills, especially the J2EE design patterns. Experience with Oracle database and market-leading application servers also needed. Experience with relational mapping tools preferred.
This is the most senior position. This person really needs to have real enterprise software experience. They will be designing and implementing their server code using java technologies. They are not doing entity beans, but EJB is a core technology. This person doesn’t have to know, in depth, all the Java buzzwords, but should at least know what the acronyms stand for. There isn’t any database work since they have a person on board who handles all those issues.
Client Group: 2 client systems engineers: 5-10 years experience designing client/server applications and Windows clients, preferably with experience in encryption, antivirus, or document management applications as well as web services implementations. Necessary skills include Windows client development, C++, COM/DCOM, MFC, Windows32 API; networking with HTTP, HTTPS protocols; Visual C++ and source control (e.g. Perforce); strong object-oriented design and programming skills.
All this work is between the UI and the kernel, closer to the kernel. Someone that has done windows APIs, file filter drivers, worked at the service level, worked with crypto APIs. This is going to be a very senior person in this team. In the network area, they really need to understand redundancy, what to do when the client is online or offline. They will do some COM/DCOM interfaces. They aren’t married to any one OO design methodology, but use what is necessary for them.
User interface engineer: 5-7 years experience designing and developing Windows client applications and user interfaces. Skills should include experience in integrating with Windows Explorer through the shell extensions API; Windows client development, C++, COM/DCOM, MFC, Windows32 API; Visual C++ and source control (e.g. Perforce); strong object-oriented design and programming skills are important. Experience with MS Office Add-Ins a plus.
This person will be doing design and developing the UI for the client. The users do not work inside their application, they will work through their normal application (Word, Excel, etc), so the UI has to be real unobtrusive, but obvious, and elegant.
If you are interested and would like to apply please send your most updated resume and cover letter highlighting the relevant aspects in your background to: raj@s... Best Regards,
Raj Khanna

EE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE JUMPS IN FIRST QUARTER 2004 The number of employed U.S. electrical and electronics engineers continued to decline in the first quarter of the year, according to data compiled by the Department of Labor's Bureau of Statistics. For more information, read the news release at: http://www.ieeeusa.org/releases/2004/050404pr.html. Employed Number of Electrical Engineers, Computer Scientists Declines, Unemployment Rate Increases from Fourth Quarter '03 to First Quarter '04 WASHINGTON (04 May 2004) The number of employed U.S. electrical and electronics engineers (EEs) continues to decline, according to first-quarter data compiled by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). BLS reported 327,000 employed EEs in the first quarter of 2004 vs. 386,000 in the second quarter last year, a decline of 59,000 employed EEs from the 2003 quarter with the highest employment. EE employment was 349,000 in last year’s fourth quarter, a decline of 22,000. The EE unemployment rate increased from 4.5 percent in the final quarter of 2003 to 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2004, an increase of 17.8 percent. The average for 2003 was a record 6.2 percent, compared to the more typical 1.3 in 2000 and 2.0 in 2001. The joblessness rate for computer scientists and systems analysts, which averaged a record 5.2 percent last year, went from 5.4 percent in the fourth quarter to an all-time high of 6.7 in the first quarter, a 24.1 percent rise. The number of people employed in the field averaged 722,000 in 2003; the first-quarter figure was down to 672,000. "The latest statistics indicate that times are still tough for engineers," IEEE-USA President John Steadman said. "The continued shrinkage of the electrical and electronics engineering workforce should send up warning flags that the United States may be losing ground in its technological competitiveness." The news was mixed in other computer and information technology fields. The quarterly unemployment rate for computer hardware engineers fell from 9.0 percent in the fourth quarter to 4.9 in the first quarter. Computer software engineers experienced a drop from 4.5 percent to 3.3. The unemployment rate for computer programmers, however, nearly doubled from 4.6 percent to 9.0. IEEE-USA is an organizational unit of the IEEE. It was created in 1973 to advance the public good and promote the careers and public-policy interests of the more than 225,000 technology professionals who are U.S. members of the IEEE. The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. For more information, go to www.ieeeusa.org
