Airlines win Wi-Fi management battle with airports - Computerworld

Airlines win Wi-Fi management battle with airports
The FCC claims exclusive jurisdiction over the unlicensed Wi-Fi spectrum

News Story by Bob Brewin

JUNE 25, 2004 (COMPUTERWORLD) - Airlines won a key battle in their fight with airports over control of the Wi-Fi spectrum yesterday when the Federal Communications Commission ruled that it -- and not local authorities -- has "exclusive jurisdiction" over the use of unlicensed spectrum.
Airports such as Logan International in Boston, which is run by the Massachusetts Port Authority, contended they had the right to manage spectrum within their boundaries to eliminate interference. Massport and Denver International Airport have installed shared-use Wi-Fi networks offering paid public Internet access, as well as access for the airlines. But the airport operators wanted to require the airlines to pay to use the networks for wireless bag scans, check-in systems and other applications.

Forbes.com: Ultrawideband devices aim to take home wireless to the next level

Ultrawideband devices aim to take home wireless to the next level
Hiawatha Bray, 06.25.04, 10:21 AM ET

Jun. 25--The space shuttle videos looked almost better than the real thing. They were high-definition videos,

...

Those black boxes were built by Freescale Semiconductor, a division of Motorola Corp. The microchips inside them can pump out 110 million bits of data per second -- twice as much as the fastest WiFi wireless networking equipment now on the market. And that's just the beginning. Before the year's out, Freescale will be making chips that run twice as fast; by next year, it plans to offer a slice of silicon that will broadcast wireless data at one billion bits per second.

Freescale is one of the leaders in a new kind of digital technology called "ultrawideband" that's being described as the next big consumer wireless technology, thanks to its ability to pump out massive amounts of data. But even though some ultrawideband devices will come to market this year, the technology is still hobbled by regulatory challenges and a long-running clash between two incompatible ultrawideband systems.

UPS invests $200m in global wireless push - silicon.com

UPS invests $200m in global wireless push

June 24 2004

by John Lamb

World's largest corporate Wi-Fi rollout part of efficiency drive

Parcels giant UPS is making a $200m global investment in Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular wireless technology - a move that should put an end to delays caused by snapped connector cables linking workers' equipment.

In Europe, 73 parcel sorting centres and some 10,000 delivery drivers will by the end of 2005 use wireless devices. UPS, with annual revenues of around $33bn, reckons that should speed up package-tracking and enable customised services.

UPS to wield Wi-Fi rings of power

UPS to wield Wi-Fi rings of power

Delivery company UPS is to give wireless rings to all its 55,000 sorting staff, to scan and track packages.

Compared with last week's wireless surfboard, UPS' wireless ring is a practical device: using both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the rings will scan and transmit information about packages, so the exact whereabouts of any parcel can be checked by customers on the UPS site.

A scanner worn on the handler's middle finger reads the barcode on the packet and transmits the information by Bluetooth to a Wi-Fi terminal worn at the waist, which relays it to UPS' network.

Wireless heads for pricing war
Michael Crawford, Computerworld

A price war between wireless vendors is unfolding across the globe but is unlikely to reach Australian shores until 2005.

Crashing prices for wireless LANs and obsolete gateways is triggering the battle, according to a recent report from Unstrung Insider.

Enterprise wireless LAN solution prices are set to crash as all 802.11b access points are end-of-life designs and wireless gateways produced by the likes of Bluesocket will be superseded by wireless switches, the report said.

IDC Australia's senior mobile and wireless analyst Warren Chaisatien said that as competition grows for wireless LAN connections there will be heated competition within the Australian market.

Viruses and worms can do anything from annoying the user to deleting your entire computer nay crashing the network.

And that was why the communications industry panicked when the first mobile phone worm was identified last week because viruses are very easy to be spread and the damage they leave at the wake is awesome. Ken Nwogbo reports.

Until security experts said there was cause for alarm yet, the mobile communications industry stood in disbelief last week as a computer virus targeted at mobile phones was identified.

The worm's name is 'Cabir'. The virus has not been released, but was forwarded to anti-virus companies to highlight flaws in mobile technology.

The worm was said to possess the capability to impact handsets which are based on the Symbian operating system and is transmitted via Bluetooth technology.

Increase in New WLAN Risk Found at SUPERCOMM
Thursday June 24, 8:30 am ET
IBM and AirDefense monitor the air space; Detect soft APs degrading service, security

CHICAGO, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- SUPERCOMM attendees expect on-demand wireless connectivity and will do anything to get it, including putting their corporate networks at risk, according to AirDefense, a leader in 24x7 wireless monitoring who detected an accelerated growth of soft APs (access points) at SUPERCOMM.

WLAN Forum

IBM (NYSE: IBM - News) and AirDefense monitored the air space at SUPERCOMM, the world's largest conference for communication service providers and private network managers, to alert network managers to the dangers of unprotected wireless LANS (WLANs).

"Call SUPERCOMM 2004 'the year of the soft AP,'" said Richard Rushing, chief security officer of AirDefense. "People are taking control of their connectivity by purchasing software that turns their laptops into functioning access points. Consequently they are creating additional confusion and interference on the already congested network."

AirDefense noticed soft APs appearing at tradeshows as early as 2003. However as with any new technology, the proliferation of the application is increasing exponentially. Unlike previous years when conference goers used only their cell phones to call in to the office, attendees are now carting their laptops and require access to email and files on the show floor. AirDefense noted as many as 117 users attempting to connect to a single IBM Hotspot at one time. However, as these users repeatedly attempted to connect in this congested environment, they often inadvertently connected to soft APs mimicking the hotspot.

AirDefense also found the majority of attendees using wireless were using passwords in clear text when attempting to connect to the hotspot. Only 10 percent of attendees used virtual private networks (VPNs) to connect and secure their communications.

AirDefense conducted the monitoring in conjunction with show hotspot sponsor IBM. AirDefense and IBM announced a global agreement Monday recognizing AirDefense as the wireless LAN security solution to be used in IBM's Managed Security Services Wireless Intrusion Detection offering (WIDS) to detect, analyze, protect and correct potential risks and threats to the enterprise.

"The on-demand, unsecured access seen at the show is easily transferred to the corporate environment," said John Suehr, IBM Managed Security segment executive. "However, as apparent by what we are seeing at SUPERCOMM, organizations need to more closely educate and monitor how employees are using wireless devices. Using unsecured devices, whether inside or out of the company firewall, puts organizations at risk."

Analyst firm Gartner expressed similar concern at this month's Gartner IT Security Summit. Analyst John Pescatore noted wireless LANs will be the major wireless security problem facing businesses through 2008. Gartner advocated the use of independent wireless intrusion detection sensors to monitor for unauthorized wireless APs and unsecured or misconfigured APs.

While the influx of soft APs were of high concern at the show, AirDefense further identified attacks and problematic stations over the course of a few hours, including:

50 devices performing scans on the network -- 40 devices using invalid MAC or spoofed MAC addresses -- 12 devices attempting to port scan other devices connected to the
hotspot network

8 hotspot hijacking sessions of the IBM Hotspot via tools like AirSnarf
"While employees experience enhanced productivity at the show, organizations should be concerned their employees inadvertently are putting the corporate network at risk," said Anil Khatod, president and CEO of AirDefense. "By continuing to share the security results we found at SUPERCOMM and other shows, organizations should realize the increasing need to implement 24x7 monitoring of their wireless assets and to further educate employees on wireless policies required to protect themselves and their networks."

About IBM Wireless Intrusion Detection Offering

As part of IBM's Managed Security Services, IBM offers Wireless Intrusion Detection for the network. IBM will review WLAN topology as well as the physical layout of a building or office space and assist with proper deployment of wireless intrusion detection sensors. IBM has the capability to provide this support remotely or on location. Once the sensors are in place around the wireless environment, IBM will monitor in real time for wireless intrusions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with personnel skilled in Internet security and intrusion detection from our Security Operations Centers. IBM notifies of intrusion attempts or suspicious activity via an agreed to escalation process. IBM will provide daily reports detailing events and alarms and can review report data and events. IBM also provides ongoing management, administration, updates and tuning of the wireless sensors.

About AirDefense, Inc.

AirDefense is the thought leader and innovator of wireless LAN security and operational support solutions. Founded in 2001, AirDefense pioneered the concept of 24x7 monitoring of the airwaves and now provides the most advanced solutions for rogue WLAN detection, policy enforcement, intrusion protection and monitoring the health of wireless LANs. Based on a secure appliance and remote sensors, AirDefense solutions scale to support single offices, corporate campuses or hundreds of locations. Motorola Adds 45 Mbps Backhaul to Its Canopy(TM) Wireless Broadband Portfolio
Wednesday June 23, 9:00 am ET

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News) has introduced a 45 Mbps backhaul solution that bolsters its Canopy wireless broadband portfolio and offers customers an array of robust and flexible wireless broadband connectivity and transport options designed for the 5.8 GHz unlicensed spectrum.

This and several other wireless broadband solutions are showcased this week at SUPERCOMM 2004 (June 22-24, McCormick Place, Chicago) where Motorola is exhibiting in Booth #13800.

For wireless Internet service providers, the new backhaul allows extension of networks for providing broadband services to neighboring communities. For enterprise and telecom customers, the new solution provides a cost-effective backhaul alternative as well as T1 replacement savings when paired with a T1/E1 Multiplexer (see related June 23 press release from Motorola).

"Where geography is a challenge and infrastructure a priority, mobile operators and Internet providers can offer reliable, robust coverage," said Juan Santiago, director of strategy for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband business. "Municipalities, universities, schools and hospitals stand to benefit from the economics of this technology, while enterprises now have a cost-effective alternative that provides a high-capacity, secure link that quickly creates a seamless local area network between company headquarters and outlying buildings."

This latest addition to Motorola's Canopy product portfolio delivers up to 33 Mbps effective throughput with greater than 160dB of system gain. Motorola Adds Scalable T1/E1 Multiplexing to Its Canopy(TM) Wireless Broadband Portfolio
Wednesday June 23, 9:00 am ET

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., June 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News) has expanded its Canopy(TM) wireless broadband portfolio with the addition of a T1/E1 Multiplexer. Combined with a Canopy backhaul module, the new Canopy T1/E1 Multiplexer offers service providers, enterprises and organizations with campus-like environments a flexible, reliable, and low-cost wireless broadband solution by eliminating costly monthly fees associated with T1 or E1 leased lines.

The announcement was made at SUPERCOMM 2004 (June 22-24, McCormick Place, Chicago), where Motorola is showcasing its broadband wireless solutions in Booth #13800.

By minimizing the monthly cost of leased lines, enterprise owners can quickly realize an improved return on their investment. For example, a downtown corporate PBX network dependent on T1 lines to connect with its suburban campus can realize cost-savings by establishing a broadband wireless connection. In addition, service providers can transform their business to include T1 replacement markets for voice and legacy data, as well as cost savings for primary or redundant backhaul links.

"Our service provider and enterprise customers now have access to a greater variety of cost-effective backhaul and enterprise campus (LAN/WAN) solutions for both legacy (TDM) and IP traffic," said Juan Santiago, director of strategy for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband business. "And while all can enjoy the cost-savings of this technology, service providers can also anticipate an array of new revenue-producing opportunities."

A key feature of the Canopy T1/E1 Multiplexer is its incremental multi-port design. Each unit comes equipped with one or four physical ports; additional capacity can be added to the one port unit by activating optional software. This enables customers to expand as their needs grow. For example, ports can be enabled to support up to a total of four T1 or three E1 lines over a Canopy 20 Mbps backhaul.

Metropolitan Mobile Networks

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 21, 2004 - Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network solution which provides broadband wireless access across a city to public sector agencies such as city, state and federal agencies, public safety (police, fire, and ambulance), transportation and public works. With a unified, cost effective IP network foundation, the Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network addresses the demand of public sector agencies for real-time, mobile access to key applications and tools that may ultimately lead to the increased productivity and responsiveness of city personnel.

This scalable, secure, standards-based solution consists of Cisco Aironet Series of Wi-Fi outdoor infrastructure and Cisco 3200 Series Routers with the new integrated Wireless Mobile Interface Card that supports IEEE 802.11b/g for wireless local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) access. Together with Cisco-recognized solution providers and partners, this end-to-end solution extends network-oriented services and applications such as real-time data access and video surveillance across the wired and wireless infrastructure and provides agencies with innovative new ways to improve communications, security, and responsiveness using existing and future unlicensed and licensed wireless technologies.

Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network Solution
The Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network includes the following components to address the demand of public sector agencies:

Enabling Technology
Cisco 3200 Series Wireless and Mobile Routers - When used in vehicles, the Cisco 3200 Series Router with new integrated Wireless Mobile Interface Card creates a network comprised of laptops, PDAs, video surveillance cameras and other devices that maintain connectivity even as the vehicle moves between cellular and Wi-Fi coverage areas and across the community. In addition, with the new integrated IEEE 802.11 capabilities, the Cisco 3200 Series can be deployed in fixed locations such as on light poles and on roof tops as a ruggedized outdoor wireless router to help provide wireless coverage across the city.
Cisco Aironet Series of Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) Outdoor Infrastructure - The Cisco Aironet 1400 Series Outdoor Wireless Bridge provides long range IEEE 802.11a connectivity and the Cisco Aironet 1300 Series Outdoor AP and Wireless Bridge provides IEEE 802.11b/g connectivity and access at medium ranges.
By providing a flexible architecture to support existing wireless technologies such as IEEE 802.11a/b/g, cellular and satellite and future wireless technologies such as licensed 4.9GHz for public safety, customers can take advantage of industry standards for higher performance and more robust security. These new Cisco IOS® Software-based ruggedized products also allow customers to utilize Cisco wired and wireless backhaul points to connect wireless coverage areas that can scale across a city.

Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Networks help Protect the Community
Cook County, Illinois needed to provide high-speed broadband wireless connectivity to enhance first responders' capabilities to prepare for and respond to events and emergencies and to keep citizens of the community safe. Once the first phase of deployment is completed, the solution will enable first responders to share text, image, and video information across jurisdictional boundaries in a fast, secure and efficient manner.

"Recent events have taught valuable lessons in preparedness and the need for interagency cooperation in the development of communication technology that is interoperable, facilitates collaboration, and augments human resources," said Catherine Maras O'Leary, CIO, Cook County. "With the Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network solution, Cook County is in a better position to deliver valuable tools to enable first responders to be more efficient and safety is improved by getting timely information into their hands."

London's Westminster City Council has a vision to create a "Wireless City" that will help reduce crime; provide real time information to city officials to manage street services such as parking, premises licensing, and environment waste; assist with special events; and deliver community based services such as e-learning. Working with Cisco, the Council is deploying video-surveillance that will result in a 30% savings from rapid Wi-Fi deployment of approximately 50 cameras.

"The 'Wireless City' pilot is one of the most exciting developments in Westminster's history and is already delivering benefits to the Council and the police in our fight against crime," said Simon Norbury, CIO at the City of Westminster. "The emphasis of the project is on street management so that the CCTV network will be used to both help in the battle against crime, but also to direct council resources to where they are needed more quickly and efficiently to increase our productivity and reduce cost. The Cisco solution combines a wireless access network - for flexibility and mobility - with a wired network core providing high capacity, scalability and resilience."

Building an Ecosystem of Partners
Cisco is committed to working with partners to deliver a comprehensive solution for public sector customers:

Systems Integrators - To deliver the end-to-end Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network solution, Cisco has engaged with industry-leading partners including large scale integrators such as IBM and Northrop Grumman and regional integrators such as Wireless Resources, Inc.
Hardware Integration Partners - To create complementary hardware components and hardware-based application designs for the Cisco 3200 Series, Cisco's partners include Western Datacom which has recently announced a cellular modem interface card and hardware acceleration encryption card in the same form factor as other interface cards in the Cisco 3200 Series. Technology Alternatives has developed a networked video surveillance solution for public safety vehicles, incorporating the Cisco 3200 Series. And for use of the Cisco 3200 Series Wireless Router outside, ICI Networks and Rittal Corporation provide solutions for ruggedized enclosure hardware to meet harsh environmental requirements.
"Real-time decision-making and the need for first responders and city officials to access and process information dynamically is becoming increasingly important as the demand to improve security, productivity and operational efficiency becomes more critical," said Paulette Altmaier, Vice President and General Manager, Premises Communications Business Unit, Cisco Systems, Inc. "The Cisco Metropolitan Mobile Network solution is designed to enhance mobility capabilities by providing a flexible, scalable and highly secure wireless network infrastructure to help public sector agencies meet these demands and as a result better serve the community."

The Little Engine That Could
How Linux is Inadvertently Poised to Remake the Telephone and Internet Markets
By Robert X. Cringely

PBS | I, Cringely . Archived Column

One of the cheapest Linux computers you can buy brand new (not at a garage sale) is the Linksys WRT54G, an 802.11g wireless access point and router that includes a four-port 10/100 Ethernet switch and can be bought for as little as $69.99 according to Froogle. T

hat's a heck of a deal for a little box that performs all those functions, but a look inside is even more amazing. There you'll find a 200 MHz MIPS processor and either 16 or 32 megs of DRAM and four or eight megs of flash RAM -- more computing power than I needed 10 years ago to run a local Internet Service Provider with several hundred customers. But since the operating system is Linux and since Linksys has respected the Linux GPL by publishing all the source code for anyone to download for free, the WRT54G is a lot more than just a wireless router. It is a disruptive technology.

A disruptive technology is any new gizmo that puts an end to the good life for technologies that preceded it.

Motorola Debuts Its Canopy(TM) 900 MegaHertz Wireless Broadband Radio at SUPERCOMM 2004
Tuesday June 22, 9:00 am ET

CHICAGO, June 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News) will unveil a new 900 MegaHertz (MHz) Canopy(TM) wireless broadband product portfolio when SUPERCOMM 2004 opens today. Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband team will showcase the new 900 MHz product and several other wireless broadband solutions at Booth 13800 during SUPERCOMM, which runs through June 24 at Chicago's McCormick Place.
The new Canopy portfolio will add a pair of 900 MHz radio configurations:

A version featuring an external antenna that allows public and private network operators to equip modules either with directional or omni-directional antennas for specific network needs.
An integrated version with a 60-degree antenna.
Both products provide a consistent 3.3 Mbps signaling rate and can reach subscribers more than 40 miles away depending on conditions.

Canopy's 900 MHz radios offer scalability, interference mitigation and robustness that are more important with the propagation attributes of a 900 MHz system. Like other Canopy products, the 900 MHz solutions include multiple interference mitigation techniques including a 3dB carrier-to-interference ratio, GPS synchronization, and built in QOS support on every subscriber radio.

"We've been testing the 900 MHz external antenna version and have been pleased with the results so far. This product will certainly become a mainstay of our future deployments due to its ability to 'see' through foliage and other obstructions that would have previously limited our ability to provide service in the area," said Brian Magnuson of Washington-based Cascade Networks.

The new 900 MHz products are designed to support both Line-of-Sight (LOS), to extend existing networks to remote locations, and increased Non Line-of- Sight (NLOS) applications. The Canopy 900 MHz solution supplements the Canopy 2.4 and 5 GHz flexible architecture to reach customers in hard to cover areas.

"The new 900 MHz products round out our unlicensed portfolio, offering options at 2.4, 5.2, and 5.7 GHz and now 900 MHz," said Tom Hulsebosch, senior director of sales and marketing for Motorola. "We continue to build on our 5 GHz foundation, adding scalable, robust industry-leading wireless broadband solutions to help our customers meet their subscribers' needs."
