July 2004 (Newstream) -- Single Digits, Inc., the preeminent provider of business-class hotspot management software today continues its spotlight series profiling Wi-Fi Internet connectivity and users at unique summer venues. This stop, Single Digits logs into historic Portsmouth, New Hampshire and profiles Wi-Fi Web surfers among the City's historic seaside park and outdoor cafés.
The City of Portsmouth is the second oldest city in New Hampshire, originally settled in 1623. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the City was renowned as a major shipbuilding center. Today, Portsmouth continues to elevate its prominence by being labeled as one of the top U.S. cities to live in by US News & World Report and Money Magazine. Most recently, the City has set sail on a new 21st Century venture to wirelessly connect residents, business individuals and tourists to the Internet - free-of-charge - at speeds hundreds of times faster then typical dial-up connections.
Located at the mouth of the Piscataqua River and gateway to the Atlantic Ocean is Portsmouth's Prescott Park. The City has cast an imperceptible Wi-Fi net across the park's docks, boardwalks, open fields and blooming flower gardens to enable individuals to combine scenic views and fresh air with emailing, Web surfing and staying connected to the office while dining out during a lunch break.
Portsmouth's famed Market Square is located several blocks west of Prescott Park. Individuals bearing laptops can be found among the Square's various cafés, antique stores and boutique shops. The 21st Century communicators stand in stark contrast to the City's aged cobblestone square and unique brick buildings and sidewalks.
Portsmouth selected to deploy the high-speed Wi-Fi service not as a revenue generating resource, but rather as a marketing tool to better support and promote area businesses and to serve its thriving tourist population. Business Development Manger, Ginny Griffith of the Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, details how Single Digits' wireless high-speed Internet access is helping to unobtrusively extract pertinent information from Wi-Fi users.
"When Wi-Fi-enabled, laptop and PDA users open up their Web browsers, they are presented with a brief survey page that walks them through several questions before allocating a user name and password for access to the free Wi-Fi service. Information imparted by connecting individuals will be utilized to better promote our businesses and City to residents and visitors," Ginny said.
The Single Digits' Advantage
Single Digits' business-class hotspot management software has empowered the City of Portsmouth to provide a well-received, ubiquitous Internet service in exchange for marketing information. Single Digits leases its hotspot management software to organizations, allowing them to become the service provider with 100 percent control over its appearance, usage and revenue. Or in Portsmouth's case, the freedom to allocate
Internet privileges in exchange for elusive marketing information. And because it's a Single Digits' hotspot, Portsmouth has the ability to initiate their own brand of Web-based marketing to users.

0 commentsWireless LAN Tools: Analyze This Part 1
In this three part study, we show you what tools are available to enable you to learn how your WLAN is being used and whether it could be improved.
by Lisa Phifer
VP Core Competence, Inc.
[July 20, 2004]
Wireless LANs based on 802.11 Wi-Fi protocols are deceptively simple to install, but achieving optimum or even acceptable levels of security and performance can be tough. Many operators don't really know how their WLAN is being used, if outsiders are consuming WLAN resources, or whether fine-tuning could improve quality of service.
Traditional traffic monitoring and diagnostic tools used in 802.3 Ethernet LANs are helpful in wireless LANs too—particularly those aimed at the transport and application layers. Utilities like ping and traceroute can still be used to trouble-shoot connectivity, and monitors like MRTG can still be used to measure traffic headed into your wired network from your WLAN.

Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATHR) today announced that the company's Super
AG(TM) and Super G(TM) technologies, which dramatically increase the
throughput of wireless LAN communications, have been adopted by the majority
of Japanese wireless LAN equipment vendors and PC manufacturers. The company
also announced that many of these vendors are branding product with Super AG
and Super G logos to communicate to end users the presence of these advanced
technologies within select devices. For the list of manufacturers that have
adopted Atheros Super AG and Super G technologies and logos, please see the
Note to Editors below.
The Super AG/G logo is being placed on PCs and wireless LAN equipment that

branding program. The logos are also being included on product spec sheets,
brochures and websites to highlight the wireless technology capability. With
Super logos, end users are able to easily identify and select products that
offer Super AG/G interoperability across different brands.
"The Atheros Total 802.11 Branding Program, which began in September 2003,
has been widely accepted by our customers and has achieved strong momentum in
the market," said Tomoki Ohsawa, General Manager of Atheros Communications
K.K. "With the Super AG and Super G brands, we are enabling our customers to

About Super G and Super AG Technology
Atheros Super G and Super AG technology employs innovative performance-
enhancement features -- including packet bursting, fast frames, and data
compression -- that improve the throughput and range of wireless networking
products. The technology delivers user link rates up to two times faster than
standard 802.11g or 802.11a/g products while preserving full compatibility
with standard IEEE 802.11g or 802.11a/g networks. Super G and Super AG support
up to 54 Mbps data rates for users in Japan, with typical end-user throughputs
as high as 40 Mbps. Outside Japan, with a dynamic turbo mode activated, the
technology can achieve throughputs of more than 60 Mbps for typical data. This
is the highest throughput performance available on the market today. Atheros
chipsets with Super G and Super AG technologies have shipped since the second
quarter of 2003.

Going Beyond the Call
Erika Brown, 07.19.04, 3:10 PM ET
PALO ALTO, CALIF. - A debate over the future of Wi-Fi was one of the hottest panels of the two-day Always-On conference held at Stanford University the week of July 12. Top executives from Intel, Motorola and Qualcomm are dedicated to stretching the borders of Wi-Fi to handle broadband content. But first they have to agree how to do it.
Zapping bits from here to there over Internet and cellular networks has always been a complex, ethereal concept. But wireless technology is even more problematic. It is based on a literally ethereal network--radio airwaves--and each protocol has multiple subdivisions that operate at higher or lower frequencies and transfer data at different rates per second. With so many standards and protocols, betting on the wrong technology could be detrimental.
...
Padmasree Warrior, chief technology officer of Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ), believes the next big thing will be some combination of WiMax, 3G and Wi-Fi. "No one technology can provide both coverage and incredible bandwidth. We need integration of these technologies. It should switch over seamlessly without the user having to think about it," says Warrior. "I should be able to move the content I've created or purchased across multiple devices. We need an open platform so that open source software could be built on the phones to enable that. [Sun Microsystems' (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people )] Java and Linux will be critical drivers of the future."

0 commentsWireless technologies free keyboards, mice
You don't need to hard-wire a keyboard or mouse to your computer any longer thanks to wireless models.
Wireless keyboards and mice often come packaged as a set, which is cheaper than buying them separately. These sets cost between $50 and $250, but they vary in terms of technology and features.
Wireless input devices come in two types — Bluetooth and radio frequency (RF) — each of which has pros and cons.
Bluetooth has a stated maximum range of 30 feet. RF has a much shorter range of six feet.
RF lets you position the mouse or keyboard up to six feet from the keyboard. The mouse and keyboard operate by receiving signals from a base station that plugs into the computer's Universal Serial Bus (USB) or PS/2 port.
