Wireless LAN Enterprise Market Grows 21 Percent in 2Q04 - Dell'Oro Group Report Shows Emerging Wireless LAN Switch / Appliance Market More Than Doubles Q/Q

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 2004--A newly published report from Dell'Oro Group reveals the Enterprise Wireless LAN (WLAN) segment grew 21 percent Q/Q to $204 million. This growth bolstered the market as WLAN revenues declined 2 percent overall.

Enterprise growth came primarily from two different segments: Access Points, and WLAN Switch / Appliances. The Access Points -- Enterprise segment grew 10%, largely as a result of Cisco successfully transitioning its product lines and sales from 802.11b to 802.11g-based products. The WLAN Switch segment grew almost 150%, as Symbol Technologies nearly quadrupled its sales, reinforcing its leadership in this emerging segment.

"This was a major quarter for the WLAN Switch / Appliance segment and for the market leader Symbol Technologies which grew its share by approximately 60% percent," commented Greg Collins, Senior Director of wireless LAN research at Dell'Oro Group. "Symbol was early to market with their WLAN switch offering, and so during the past year their customer base has increasingly accepted this new network architecture."

Motorola Leading Evolution to All IP-Based CDMA Networks
August 18, 2004 09:15:00 AM ET

Offers Next Generation IP Base Station Controller to Complement Expanded Portfolio of Packet Base Stations

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. MOT, a leader in IP-based CDMA networks, continues to enhance its CDMA IP Radio Access Network (IP-RAN) portfolio with an expanded packet base station product line and a next generation CDMA base station controller. This IP-based architecture enables network operators greater flexibility in network deployment and the ability to deliver a host of new services and applications to their customers with an enhanced end user experience.

Motorola's IP-based network solutions help operators drive quality and performance improvements in their networks while reducing capital and operational expenditures. "As the standards community continues to focus on the advantages of IP, Motorola is well positioned with a portfolio of network solutions that meets the needs of operators today while providing cost- effective migration to networks of the future," said Bruce Stone, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's CDMA Systems Division.

The IP-RAN portfolio highlights include:

-- Next generation IP Base Station Controller (IP-BSC)

-- Refreshed product line of CDMA Packet Base Station (BTS) solutions

-- IP-based backhaul and transport

Motorola has deployed IP in its CDMA RAN since 2002 with the implementation of routable IP Transport. Motorola's migration to a distributed architecture and refreshed portfolio demonstrates its commitment to leading the evolution to all-IP networks. The result is a scaleable IP-BSC solution with improved capacity and a significantly reduced footprint, an enhanced BTS product line and a highly efficient IP-based backhaul and transport network that completes Motorola's CDMA RAN offering. With this portfolio Motorola is delivering CDMA solutions such as CDMA2000 1xEV-DO that are compliant with 3GPP2 standards and is capable of supporting technologies such as CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Release A and CDMA2000 1xEV-DV.

Specifically, Motorola's next generation IP-BSC redefines the traditional architecture to a flexible IP-based solution. The highly scaleable, distributed nature of Motorola's new IP-BSC offering translates to flexible upgrades, network efficiencies and easy expansion paths for operators to meet growing traffic demands. As a result, it is well suited for new and existing deployments in both mature and emerging markets.

Motorola's portfolio of new CDMA base station solutions includes:

-- SC(TM)480 micro-cell BTS

-- SC(TM)4812T Lite macro BTS

-- SC(TM)4812T-MC macro multi-carrier BTS

Motorola's CDMA packet base station product family offers a broad range of solutions including access to mobile broadband services via CDMA2000 1xEV-DO; it can support deployments in urban, suburban and rural environments. The common architecture platform utilized for the SC4812T-MC and SC4812T Lite has now been extended to the SC480 micro-cell offering. All of the new CDMA base stations, SC480, SC4812T Lite and SC4812T-MC, are capable of supporting key CDMA standards including the CDMA2000 1xEV family - 1xEV-DO, 1xEV-DO Release A, and 1xEV-DV.

The latest mini flying robot has been unveiled by Seiko Epson in Japan.
The micro flyer is the next version of the robot by the Japanese technology firm that wowed crowds with last year.

Weighing in at 12.3g, the FR-II is wireless, has Bluetooth and its own battery on board, unlike its precursor, and takes and sends images.

Its two tiny ultrasonic motors let it buzz about for three minutes. Seiko Epson said it could be used in search and rescue operations in two years.

The helicopter robot, which is lighter than a can of pop, could be used in surveillance operations or for reaching into tiny spaces to look for earthquake survivors.

Abstract: The rapid deployment of wireless LANs in the enterprise means hidden security risks await CIOs and IT Managers. Early WLAN's deployed for a department or other limited usage are now quickly growing into multi-use, multi-location wireless LAN sites. These WLANs are giant targets for creative crackers to attempt hacks and also for worms and viruses. To be successful, organizations must be proactive in their approach for enterprise-wide security and management for their wireless networks.

Winncom Technologies Becomes Distributor of Motorola's Canopy(TM) Wireless Broadband Products
Monday August 16, 1:24 pm ET

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - News) announced today that it has named Winncom Technologies as a distributor to sell Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband products into Russia and other Eastern European countries. In addition, Winncom will be establishing a channel of authorized Canopy solutions providers in the region.

Winncom Technologies Corp., a subsidiary of ARC Wireless Solutions Inc., (OTC Bulletin Board: ARCS - News), is a value-added distributor of wireless broadband, wireless fidelity (WiFi), voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), virtual private network (VPN) and other wireless networking related products and services.

"We have experience in selling wireless broadband products and we are very pleased to be able to add the Canopy portfolio. Motorola is a unique company in that it offers a complete wireless end-to-end broadband network solution, including global support services and training. We believe the portfolio of products we will be adding to our distribution channels will be well received by our customers throughout the region," said Gregory E. Raskin, chief executive officer of Winncom Technologies.

"We are seeing great sales gains in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa because these regions don't have a lot of existing high-speed data connectivity alternatives, and where they do, it's often expensive and unreliable," said Dennis Stipati, director of sales for Motorola's Canopy Wireless Broadband business in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Michael Cai, senior analyst with Dallas-based Parks Associates, said governments in Eastern Europe are interested in delivering broadband services to more businesses and households. "Eastern European countries such as Russia and Poland have broadband penetration rates of lower than 0.5 percent, but as the economies of these regions continue to grow, more and more computers will be purchased, and in turn, more people want high-speed connectivity," said Cai. "I expect wireless broadband to play an important role and show steady percentage growth in Eastern Europe for the next several years."

About Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband

Motorola's Canopy wireless broadband is an always-on, high-speed broadband solution for cost-effective connectivity to private networks, such as governments or enterprises and to Internet service providers and carriers. The Canopy system's superior performance promises one of the lowest total costs of ownership and can significantly reduce a provider's start-up, maintenance and leased-line costs. The Canopy point-to-point and point-to- multipoint system configurations are being deployed in more than 85 countries around the world.
