As expected today, Intel rolled out its long awaited tri-mode wireless module with support for three Wi-Fi standards, 802.11a, b and g.
The new module includes software intended to make it easier for end-users to set up wireless connections with any Wi-Fi network at the maximum speed available, and also offers added security, according to a statement from the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company. The new module is part of Intel's Centrino mobile technology family, which includes the Pentium M processor, 855-chipset family and a PRO/Wireless network connection.
Intel noted that Pyramid research has forecast that there could be as many as 700 million Wi-Fi users by 2007.
"Wi-Fi networks continue to increase rapidly in number, but users still have concerns about how hard it will be to connect and whether the network is secure," said Jim Johnson, president and general manager of the wireless networking group, in a statement. "

K-State is capitalizing on one of the fastest-growing technological trends: wireless Internet access.
Wireless Internet access is transmitted to personal laptop computers through radio waves. These radio waves are transmitted through the air from an existing access point at various locations on campus to computers with wireless Internet capabilities.
There are advantages to going wireless, said Rebecca Gould, director of the Information Technology Assistant Center.
“It’s mobile computing — anytime, anywhere. It’s called untethered, unwired,” Gould said.
