Motorola touts ZigBee for the home
Upcoming wireless standard deployed in first consumer devices
Tom Sanders at NextFest in San Francisco, vnunet.com 17 May 2004

Motorola gave the public a first peek at some of its consumer applications for the upcoming ZigBee wireless standard this weekend at NextFest in San Francisco.

The upcoming wireless standard, scheduled to be finalised this September, uses the same 2.4GHz radio band as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Although ZigBee offers less bandwidth than Bluetooth it consumes far less power, making it more suitable for devices that need to constantly transmit data. It has a range of up to 30 metres.

Up the wi-fi creek in Cyprus

By Mike Magee in Cyprus: Saturday 25 September 2004, 09:50

INTEL, along with ATI and Hitachi are co-sponsors of this Canyon-Prestigio event here in Cyprus and we are now watching a presentation by Intel man Thomas Agostino.
He reckons that by 2008 there will be 180,000 public worldwide wireless LAN hotspots worldwide. That’s based on figures from Gartner.

Agostino said that consumers are now starting to get the idea of wireless LANs with compound annual growth of around 41 per cent. A lot of that, he said, is driven by consumers.

Forbes.com: Wi-Fi May Be Portable, But Wires are Reliable

Wi-Fi May Be Portable, But Wires are Reliable
By Jessica Davis, 09.24.04, 11:12 AM ET

Broadcom and Intel may be pushing Wi-Fi to connect the digital home and Freescale may be pushing ultra wideband -- but another company is planning to capture the market by relying on old infrastructure ? existing power lines.?Intellon pioneered the technology behind HomePlug, a standard set by the HomePlug Powerline Alliance.? Through this technology home power wires serve a second purpose ? as the networking infrastructure for the home. Now the company is developing products for a new version of the spec that offers the kind of throughput required for HDTV content

Early technology from Intellon focused on automated power meter reading devices for power companies and a brake communications system for the trucking industry.

But the company's founder, looking to bring automation to his own home, discovered a way to solve the two problems that had previously thwarted data networking over power lines: noise, and the fact that most homes' wiring are split into two branches that did not allow a device on one branch to talk to a device on the other branch.

Intellon launched the first chip based on the HomePlug 1.0 spec about 3 years ago. The HomePlug standard is based on Intellon's patented technology.? Initial products from Linksys and Netgear hit the shelves in Q2 2002. The products look like a power brick that is plugged into the wall and has an Ethernet port on the bottom.

Frost & Sullivan Recognizes Chantry Networks for Excellence in Wireless LAN Solutions

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 2004--At tonight's Excellence in Mobile Communications Awards Banquet, Frost & Sullivan will present Chantry Networks with the 2004 Wireless LAN Solutions Excellence in Technology for Chantry's development of the innovative BeaconWorks(TM) wireless LAN for voice and data communications.

BeaconWorks, based on a Layer 3 architecture, is a solution that provides superior wireless mobility for end users in education, healthcare, hospitality, federal and municipal government organizations, and large enterprises. BeaconWorks key differentiator is its ability to provide both seamless and pervasive connectivity and communication.

"BeaconWorks' distinctive architecture leverages the existing, fault-tolerant IP networks that are ubiquitous in organizations worldwide," notes Frost & Sullivan industry analyst Michael Valenti. "Rather than seeking to replace these networks, Chantry utilizes the existing networks as a transport medium between BeaconWorks' BeaconPoint access points and its BeaconMaster wireless router. This approach delivers the performance necessary to advance the widespread adoption of wireless LANs with a minimal resource drain."

BeaconWorks is a departure from conventional wireless LAN solutions by addressing the issue of portability -- enabling a user to connect to different plug-in points on a single wireless network. Chantry's vision enables true mobility where the wireless user gets ubiquitous connectivity throughout the enterprise without having to re-authenticate or experience a disruption in service. As more organizations turn to wireless voice over IP (VoFi), the seamless nature of BeaconWorks will provide a distinct performance edge over less elegant technologies.

Chantry has taken an innovative approach to overcome numerous obstacles in terms of wireless manageability, reliability, and security. This has enabled Chantry to build a solution that scales from tens to literally thousands of access points and hundreds of thousands of simultaneous users, while also providing "self-healing" and resilient connection technologies to ensure maximum availability.

"The BeaconWorks family of products takes the concept of a WLAN to the next level -- WLAN routing -- to enable out-of-the-box compatibility with leading wired network infrastructures, provide the foundation for wireless voice over IP, and give customers a future-proof solution for wireless data and voice communications," adds Valenti.

The BeaconWorks product suite includes Chantry's innovative VNSWorks technology, which provides a complete set of tools to manage infrastructure and client services. It gives the organization the flexibility to modify user policies quickly by taking into account variables natural to the wireless environment such as location and time.

"BeaconWorks has been recognized widely as the innovative approach to wireless networks," said Peter N. Vicars, president & CEO, Chantry Networks. "Frost & Sullivan's Excellence in Technology Award is one more proof point for our existing and future customers that a future-proof, routed WLAN is a smart way to go."

Frost & Sullivan's Excellence in Technology Award acknowledges the development and introduction of an innovative technology into the market, which is expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. It also recognizes the overall technical excellence of the company and its commitment toward technology innovation.

Held in Las Vegas, Frost & Sullivan's 2004 Excellence in Mobile Communications Awards Banquet honors world-class companies for outstanding performance and achievements in wireless and mobile strategy, technology, platforms, and services. An annual event, the banquet recognizes the quality and merit of distinguished individuals and companies.
