Colubris Introduces Service Aware Wi-Fi QoS for Multiservice Voice, Data, and Video WLANs

Colubris Introduces Service Aware Wi-Fi QoS for Multiservice Voice, Data, and Video WLANs

WALTHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 2004--
Colubris Releases Industry's First SSID-based QoS

Standards-based Solution Leaves No Wi-Fi Device Behind

Colubris Networks announced Service Aware Wi-Fi Quality of Service (QoS) software for its Multiservice Wireless LAN System of enterprise and service provider products today.

A standards-based solution that is fully-compliant with 802.11e and WMM(TM) (Wi-Fi MultiMedia), Colubris Service Aware Wi-Fi QoS is a scalable, easily deployed solution that provides service (SSID) defined QoS for legacy and next generation voice, data and video services and applications. This means that enterprise and service provider customers can provide QoS for differentiated data, 802.11e/SIP/H.323 and other voice devices, video, retail handhelds and also non-protocol devices - such as lifeline and video surveillance devices - simultaneously over a shared, centrally managed WLAN.

"Over the last year we have had great results deploying a city wide wireless broadband solution," said Anthony Rodrigues, director of information technology, City of Malden in Massachusetts. "This backbone infrastructure supports data, video monitoring and prioritizing of voice packets. The Colubris product line provides us with a scalable, centrally managed access solution that delivers outstanding multi-layered security and the service flexibility needed for the diverse municipal environment."

Close to half of all corporate telephone lines worldwide will be IP-based by the end of the decade with revenues of $1 billion in 2004 climbing to over $5 billion in 2008 according to a recent report by the Radicati Group, a consulting and market research group. Analysts expect voice services and applications to be a major market driver in the WLAN market. Wireless LANs optimized by advanced QoS will be critical for the large-scale deployment of multiservice voice, data and video applications, particularly in the enterprise.

"Users should not adopt Wireless LAN based voice services without network guarantees. Standards-based Quality of Service capabilities are absolutely essential for voice over Wi-Fi," said David Willis, vice president, META Group, a leading provider of IT research, advisory services and strategic consulting. "Further, the current approaches to management are too complex. As we've already seen with basic Voice over IP deployments, industry-leading solutions must offer simplified management."

The Colubris Networks WLAN System

The Colubris Networks WLAN System provides enterprise and service provider customers a scalable, multiservice WLAN solution that seamlessly integrates with existing LAN/WAN infrastructures. Based on a family of Centralized WLAN Management, WLAN Services Controllers and Intelligent Access Devices, the solution provides service-aware Wi-Fi QoS and security for legacy and next generation Wi-Fi voice, data and video applications and services. The solution is optimized for performance, scalability and ease of deployment with the ability to scale from a handful of devices and applications on a few sites to an extensive network of thousands of sites, users and applications.

About Colubris Networks

MRV Communications, Inc. - TereScope Product Line

TereScope Product Line

MRV is the leader in Free-Space Optics through its TereScope™ product line. Free-Space Optics (also known as “FSO”, or “Optical Wireless”) is an optical data, voice and video transmission system. Like fiber optic cable, FSO communications systems use laser light to transmit a digital signal between two transceivers. However, unlike fiber, the laser light is transmitted through the air (free-space) instead of through a glass strand. In order for the digital signal to be transmitted and received, there must be clear line of site between each FSO unit. In other words, there should be no obstructions such as trees or buildings between the transceiver units.

The TereScope™ family of Free-Space Optics (FSO) products provides low-cost, high-speed wireless connectivity for a variety of last-mile applications. Whether you need narrowband voice or broadband data, MRV’s products provide scalable, wireless alternatives to leased lines. Operating at data rates of 1.5 Mbps to Gigabit speeds, TereScope systems are deployable in one day, without requiring right-of-way or government permits for installation, providing you with communication links in hours instead of weeks or months. Whether you are a Service Provider or an Enterprise customer, the TereScope family of products can provide you with the data rate, performance and reliability that you need in a communications network.

Forbes.com: China handset makers to lose mkt shr on outdated technology - Xinhua Far East

China handset makers to lose mkt shr on outdated technology - Xinhua Far East
, 09.30.04, 9:01 AM ET

BEIJING (AFX) - A saturated market and relatively outdated technology are causing Chinese handset producers to lose out to their international rivals, Xinhua Far East China Ratings said.

"China's fragmented industry is flush with domestic brand producers, most of them lagging behind international brand handset makers in terms of technology and product innovation," said Ivan Chung, Xinhua Far East's Managing Director.

"As a result, Chinese manufacturers will be vulnerable when competition inevitably begins to intensify," he said in a statement.

"As mobile handsets evolve from simple voice communication equipment to personal multimedia communication gadgets, the technological advantages of international brand cellular phone makers will give them an increasingly favorable advantage over domestic brand manufacturers in the Chinese market," Chung said.

Weak sales of mobile phones in China during the first six months of the year, coupled with a marked increase in production capacity has led to a substantial increase in the number of unsold cellphones, Xinhua Far East said.

Intel Advances Intel® Centrino™ Mobile Technology With New Wireless Capabilities, Software Features
Wi-Fi Module Offers Easier Connections, Improved Security
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 26, 2004 - Intel Corporation today announced the addition of key wireless capabilities for notebooks based on Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology, including ease-of-use software, advanced security features, and support for the three Wi-Fi standards. The new tri-mode wireless module (supporting IEEE standards 802.11a, b and g) and wireless software help make it faster and easier for end-users to set up a wireless connection with any Wi-Fi network, at the maximum available data rate.

According to analyst firm Pyramid Research*, there could be as many as 700 million Wi-Fi users by 2007. However, even as Wi-Fi becomes increasingly pervasive, the benefits and advantages of wireless computing are still clouded by concerns of security and complexity. Intel has significantly improved several key areas of wireless computing that help make connecting to standard Wi-Fi networks around the world simpler and more secure.

"Wi-Fi networks continue to increase rapidly in number, but users still have concerns about how hard it will be to connect and whether the network is secure," said Jim Johnson, Intel vice president and general manager of the Wireless Networking Group. "With this new addition to Intel Centrino mobile technology, Intel is delivering sophisticated ease-of-use and security features to enable a better mobile computing experience."

Software Simplifies End-User Experience
Along with the new Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection, Intel is also delivering the Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software version 9.0. The updated software includes a tool called the Intel Smart Wireless Solution which is made up of a configuration wizard, advanced troubleshooting and automated security set up. The technology detects and shows all available networks and offers advanced profile management so users can more easily connect to different wireless networks while at home, in the office or on the road.

Additionally, Intel has worked with leading vendors to make it even easier to get connected to the Internet. Intel has implemented the most current version of Cisco Compatible Extensions* in Intel PROSet/Wireless Software version 9.0, which delivers compatibility and interoperability with Cisco infrastructure. Additionally, as a result of an agreement announced last year between Intel and Linksys*, the two companies have co-developed a solution that allows Intel Centrino mobile technology-based notebooks to locate an un-configured Linksys access point and automatically guide users through a short and simple set-up process.

Advanced Security for Wireless Users
To help protect end-users and keep corporate information safe, Intel has included the latest wireless LAN security solutions in its new wireless offering. For enterprise users, this module supports the new IEEE 802.11i security standard, which offers the highest level of security currently available. Enterprise users can also employ a single sign-on feature during login to seamlessly authenticate users on the wireless network. Advanced auto-detection and auto-select security capabilities make it easier for wireless users to employ the highest available security settings. The technology currently supports Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and WEP security, and is expected to support WPA2, when available.

The Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection is the latest addition to Intel Centrino mobile technology, which combines the Intel® Pentium® M processor, the Intel® 855 chipset family and an Intel PRO/Wireless network connection WLAN solution. Intel Centrino mobile technology enables integrated wireless LAN connectivity, great battery life, lighter weight PC designs and outstanding mobile performance.

Athens Hotspots
To continue to demonstrate the benefits of wireless computing and to celebrate the launch of the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection, Intel enabled several 802.11a/b/g hotspots in Athens this summer for global travelers to enjoy. Travelers and local residents are able to send photos, check e-mail, make voice-over-IP phone calls worldwide and stay connected. Users of the 802.11a/b/g hotspots enjoyed the benefits of a tri-mode solution, including high-speed bandwidth, less interference and quicker connections using Intel PROSet/Wireless Software version 9.0.

Pricing and Availability
The Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection will be featured in Intel Centrino mobile technology-based notebook PCs that will be introduced worldwide beginning in September and continuing throughout the fourth quarter of this year. In 10,000-unit quantities, the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG network connection is priced at $27.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.

Sprint and RadioShack Corporation Sign Multi-Year Agreement for Operation of Retail Kiosk Program

RadioShack to provide retail services for network of Sprint-branded kiosks in nation's top shopping malls as part of its growth strategy
RadioShack Corporation (NYSE:RSH) and Sprint (NYSE:FON) on September 21 announced the two companies have reached a multi-year agreement to develop, deploy and operate Sprint-branded kiosks in approximately 500 of the nation's leading shopping malls. The parties plan to complete their roll-out over the next three years. This includes plans to open 90 Sprint Kiosks by Spring 2005 in markets including Texas, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, Oregon, Illinois, Georgia, Florida, Washington and California. The announcement comes after a successful 10-month test program involving 10 Sprint Kiosks in different malls across the country.

RadioShack and Sprint have been working together since 1996 when the two combined to offer Sprint PCS services at RadioShack stores through an innovative store-within-a-store retailing concept. Both companies agree the results of that union helped accelerate the adoption of CDMA wireless technology and wireless phone service across the country and positioned Sprint and RadioShack as leaders in the wireless marketplace.

"This expanded kiosk program will accelerate our Retail Services business which will be an integral part of our growth strategy for the coming years," said Leonard Roberts, RadioShack's chairman and chief executive officer. "Wireless is a cornerstone of our business thanks in part to our great relationship with Sprint over the past eight years. The Sprint Kiosk test proves we can reach additional customers with minimal cannibalization to our existing wireless business."

"Consultative selling is a key practice in the wireless industry, and customers expect to be able to ask questions and get good answers," said Len Lauer, chief operating officer for Sprint and president of Sprint PCS. "RadioShack is known for its knowledgeable and engaging sales associates, which become a key asset to Sprint in the kiosk environment. We believe RadioShack's unique retail experience -- both in terms of number of stores and sales environment -- will ensure a successful roll-out of the Sprint Kiosk program."

According to the agreement, RadioShack will provide Sprint with a turn-key retail solution that leverages its own infrastructure in the areas of real estate, design and construction, distribution, merchandise selection, store operations, and hiring and training. RadioShack will be responsible for all development, implementation, and maintenance for the kiosks and the day-to-day operation. Associates working at the Sprint-branded kiosks will be employees of RadioShack.

Through the kiosk program, RadioShack and Sprint intend to capture a greater share of the high-end, youth and pre-paid market through locating kiosks in malls and by including Virgin Mobile in the product line-up. The kiosks will be stocked with the full assortment of Sprint phones, including PDA and multi-media phones.
