USE OF WIRELESS NETWORKS AND SOFTWARE IMPROVES SERVICE, SAVES RESOURCES. The city uses low-bandwidth wireless networks and city-developed software to streamline a wide range of services in the field, from water line repair to building inspections. This has improved productivity and expedited customer service. Inspectors can retrieve critical information or schedule work without having to call or return to the office. Water maintenance crews can go directly to their next assignment and use the system to locate lines and valves. Vehicle locations are captured using GPS so managers can track the precise locations of street sweepers and refuse trucks. In particular, street sweepers have been programmed to transmit the current state of their brushes. The city can determine whether the sweeper was actually sweeping or simply in route to another location.
