San Francisco aims to bridge digital divide

San Francisco aims to bridge digital divide

Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco plans to rapidly expand the number of venues where residents and tourists can get free wireless Internet access and will soon make free computers available at housing projects and community centers, Mayor Gavin Newsom said.

Earlier this year, the city set up a public WiFi center in Union Square, a prime shopping area. The Civic Center, which is near City Hall, Ferry Plaza, which is a waterfront commuter hub recently refurbished into a gourmet food market, and Portsmouth Square, otherwise known as the entrance to Chinatown, are next.

"We will not stop until every San Franciscan has access to free wireless Internet service," Newsom declared Thursday during his first State of the City address.

The 37-year-old Democrat, a self-described policy wonk who has made using technology to improve the delivery of government services one of his goals, said his administration also is dedicated to eliminating the digital divide that increasingly separates computer users from those without computers.

The city plans to work with One Economy, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that provides computers to people living in government-supported housing, to hook up some of its housing projects and community centers, according to the mayor's office.

"No San Franciscan should be without a computer and a broadband connection," he said.

Newsom announced the technology initiative as part of a broader plan for "reconnecting" the city's poorest and geographically most isolated neighborhoods with the rest of San Francisco.

STMicroelectronics Announces Ready-to-use Bluetooth-based Hands-Free Car-Kit Reference Design; Ideal for OEMs and as After-Market Solution

STMicroelectronics Announces Ready-to-use Bluetooth-based Hands-Free Car-Kit Reference Design; Ideal for OEMs and as After-Market Solution
Monday October 18, 2:40 pm ET

GENEVA, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM - News) today announced a high-performance Bluetooth®-based hands-free car-kit reference design. Featuring noise - and echo canceling, ST's Blue HFCK is ready-to-use, extremely easy to install, and suitable both for OEMs and as an after-market solution.
As a worldwide standard for the wireless exchange of data between two devices, Bluetooth allows the use of a standard protocol, independent of the cell phone. Requiring a standard 12V supply, the product uses advanced DSP technology, optimized for audio applications, to provide powerful functionality, including echo canceling, noise suppression, and voice activation.

The Bluetooth interface of Blue HFCK uses ST's STLC2410B base-band chip and STLC2150 RF chip. The STLC2410B offers a compact and complete solution for short-range wireless connectivity, and includes all lower-layer functions of the Bluetooth protocol. The chip's embedded micro supports data as well as voice, and is also used to run the Bluetooth protocol, application layers, and application software. The software runs from external Flash.

Bluetooth profiles supported by Blue HFCK include the 'Headset' profile which allows Blue HFCK to use the basic functionality of Bluetooth phones currently available; 'Dial-up networking' profile, which allows the modem of the mobile phone to be used by any Bluetooth device, such as PCs or PDAs; and the 'Object push' profile (OPP), which provides the ability to program the phonebook by sending contacts directly from the PDA. The product also supports the 'Hands-free' profile, which allows a cell phone to use the full functionality of the car kit.

All DSP functions of Blue HFCK, such as speech recognition, echo cancellation, noise suppression, automatic gain control, and audio interface are supported by ST's TDA7550R. This device is a complete system-on-chip (SOC) based on a high-performance 24-bit, fixed-point DSP core and includes program and data memory, on-chip stereo 16-bit Sigma-Delta AD/DA converters, an SPI/I2C interface, external Memory Interface (EMI), and a PLL function. The TDA7550R's program is stored and executed from an internal static RAM. The program can be loaded from an external memory attached to the EMI interface or via the I2C bus. It is possible to select how to load the program using specific general-purpose I/O (GPIO).

To support speech activation for phone numbers, Blue HFCK uses speaker-dependent speech-recognition software running on the TDA7550R. In addition, the board contains all necessary components for an analog audio interface and to drive a GSM phone. The speech recognition software supports speaker dependent and language-independent recognition to select phone numbers from a personal phonebook with voice-prompt availability and high reliability in noisy conditions. Response time is a reliable 250msec. Speaker-independent speech recognition for dialing phone numbers is also available upon request. In addition, the system offers the possibility of upgrading resident software to support new and next generation phones and new profiles.

The complete reference design is available now. US pricing for the three-chip chipset is $12, however, pricing is subject to change based upon volume.

Foundry Simplifies Wireless LAN Deployment, Management and Security With Latest Enhancements to Its Integrated WLAN Solutions

Foundry Releases Sophisticated New Deployment, Security and Management
Products and Features, Including RF Monitor, Virtual Access Points,
Plug-and-Play and Integrated Wired/Wireless Switches, to Ease Enterprise
Deployments of WLAN

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Foundry Networks(R),
Inc. (Nasdaq: FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end
switching and routing, today announced new products and features for its
IronPoint(R) wireless LAN (WLAN) solutions including a new RF monitor and RF

higher-speed WLAN standards and other developments that will make elegant
integration of the wired/wireless infrastructure and network performance
increasingly important," said Zeus Kerravala, vice president of research at
the Yankee Group. "Ease of management, long-term cost of ownership, and
scalability are equally important with or without the wires."
Foundry's new WLAN products and enhancements include:

-- Integrated RF Monitoring: a major new Foundry-engineered feature of
the IronPoint APs, RF monitoring improves security by detecting and
suppressing rogue APs, alerting users to Denial-of-Service attacks, and other
features. All new or deployed IronPoint APs can be configured to act as
dedicated, high-performance RF monitors and can be centrally managed from a
new release of IronView Network Manager, Foundry's network management system.
Integrating RF monitoring and management into Foundry's wireless solution
eliminates the need for customers to purchase and deploy a separate, single-
purpose RF monitoring solution.
-- FastIron Edge Integrated Wired/Wireless LAN Switches: Foundry's new
generation of FastIron Edge integrated wired/wireless LAN switches and
IronPoint APs support simple, secure "out of the box" AP deployment through
automatic discovery and configuration of IronPoint APs, improved switch port

multiple mobility domains on IronPoint APs, and protect each mobility domain
with unique security policies.
-- Real-time Intrusion Detection and Lockout: protects wireless LANs from
unauthorized access by detecting authentication failures in real-time and
automatically locking out repeat offenders.
-- Updated Release of IronView Network Manager: builds support for the
new wireless features into Foundry's centralized switching and routing
management system.

Integrated Wired/Wireless Solutions
Foundry's integrated solutions provide new customers as well as the
company's more than 7,100 customers with a compelling edge solution to support
wireless access as an augmentation to their high performance network
infrastructure, thus protecting their existing network investments. Foundry's
integrated wireless solutions feature three components: the IronPoint 200 IEEE
