Monster Employment Index Surges Higher in March, Continuing Strong Three-month Growth Trend in U.S. Online Job Demand

March 2005 Index Highlights:

-- Index at new all-time high of 130; up dramatically from a year ago

-- Continues steady stepwise growth in online job demand since December 2003

-- 15 of 20 industries show increases, led by mining and management of companies & enterprises

-- 22 of 23 occupational categories up over February, with military recruitment leading the way

-- All nine U.S. Census Bureau regions show increases

U.S. online job demand and online recruitment activity increased significantly in March, according to the latest findings of the Monster Employment Index. Measuring strong growth in online job availability across all Index categories, the Monster Employment Index jumped from 122 in February 2005 to 130 in March, establishing a new all-time high for the Index since its inception. The Index's March level marked a very sharp increase in online job availability compared to a year ago, when the Index stood at just 97, and capped a first-quarter trend of steady, stepwise growth in U.S. online job demand since December of last year. The Index's overall results for the past 13 months are as follows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mar. Feb. Jan. Dec. Nov. Oct. Sept. Aug. Jul. Jun. May Apr. Mar.
05 05 05 04 04 04 04 04 04 04 04 04 04
----------------------------------------------------------------------
130 122 120 113 117 114 114 112 107 108 105 103 97
----------------------------------------------------------------------

"With the Monster Employment Index showing online job availability at its highest level in the past 18 months, and a strong, three-month growth trend since the beginning of the year, U.S. online recruitment activity continues to demonstrate broad, positive momentum in 2005," said Jeff Taylor, Founder and Chief Monster. "These results, combined with other positive economic and labor market indicators, including the Department of Labor's data on rising wages and salaries, is clearly positive news for the economy and should bode well for the Class of 2005 and anyone else seeking new employment opportunities this spring and summer."

Mining, Construction and Manufacturing Among Industries Showing Increased Demand

Fifteen of the 20 industries tracked by the Monster Employment Index saw increased online job demand in March, led by the mining industry, which continued a three-month growth trend amid increased online demand for technical positions such as equipment maintenance, and engineering and finance-related positions. Other industries showing increases in March included:

-- Construction, which continued a four-month growth trend of online demand for occupations such as sales, finance, engineers, technicians, designers and trades;

-- Manufacturing, which extended a three-month growth trend for 2005 as companies continued to seek to fill openings, such as sales reps, administrative and intern positions; and

-- Accommodation & food services, which is reflective of the continued growth and strength of the U.S. restaurant industry.

Online Demand for Military Occupations Remains Strong as Recruitment Efforts Continue

Military-related positions were among the occupations seeing the strongest online demand during the month of March. Contributing to the increase is the fact that the U.S. military has relaxed its age limits and is recruiting to support efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Overall online demand for workers rose in 22 of 23 occupational categories during March, indicating increased online job availability across a wide range of positions. Occupations registering significant increases during the month included:

-- Architecture & engineering, which saw strong increases partially due to numerous large building projects that have been ramping up since the beginning of the year;

-- Food preparation and services, which edged up strongly, partially due to the continued strength in the U.S. restaurant industry; and

-- Building/grounds cleaning & maintenance, which saw continued strong demand as a result of employers continuing to prepare for upcoming seasonal needs.

Online Job Demand Rises Across All U.S. Regions in March

Online job demand for workers rose in all nine U.S. Census Bureau regions in March, led by the West South Central region, which registered the greatest month-to-month increase. All regions remained at very high levels when compared year over year. Forty-four U.S. states, along with the District of Columbia, registered increases during the month, with Alaska, Colorado, Nebraska and Oregon among those seeing the sharpest gains.
